moron, hops have nothing to do with bandwidth and increasing the hops a path uses will just use more of their resources. Lower bandwidths are cheaper, not because the first ISP router you connect to can't handle it, but because you're reducing the bandwidth you're using all the way through the paths your traffic takes. Some of those are going to be between routers only connected to other routers and likely can get saturated during busy times, hence why you often don't get the actual advertised speeds your ISP claimed.
I (technically) have 1gbps but my router only supports 600-700 on the default firmware. It's probably using some tricks but I don't need fancy firewall rules or anything so that's fine. It's also slow as frick (Archer C6). I had to change it to openwrt (to dechinkify it) and now the speeds dropped to 200-300. Tried everything: software and hardware offloading, etc. Still slow. Eventually found out that the freetard firmware is too slow. I did find a thread on the internet where a guy was asking autists for the original drivers extracted from the OEM firmware but I can't figure out what I can do with it. Have other anons faced the same issue?

When your upstream is being saturated by ACKs it limits the down, and if you're trying to actually upload anything, it effectively caps the down SEVERELY. Implementing packet prioritisation to solve this means dumb switches and high speed routers now need to be more complicated. Just giving people balanced up/down became a simpler solution and simpler is usually cheaper.
Same thing for going 1500MTU instead of dicking around with ATM frame sizes. The world has accepted 1500bytes as a standard, the days of dealing with black hole routers due to misconfigured ICMP firewalling and mismatched MTUs is kinda over now and it wasn't solved via. heuristics and window scaling, it was solved by the world moving to 1500 from consumer to producer.
Not to mention the advantages in latency and throughput meaning that fewer resources are spent dealing with queueing up for slow connections.
tl;dr your friend's mesh network probably does work better on gigabit because when the rest of the network is good your shitty mesh has fewer reasons to frick up.

Yes. I have 500mbps and my ISP keeps offering me an upgrade to 1gbps for just another few bucks but literally have no use for it. I rarely even saturate this connection and when I do the difference between this and 2x the speed would be the movie finishes downloading in 30 seconds instead of 60.

I've had this setup for a year now, the savings from cancelling Virgin have paid for the router after the 5th month and I get 600 to 700mbps. I have downloaded shitloads and my provider Three have never complained. I'm now out of contract, Smarty are doing a decent unlimited offer on a 1 month rolling pay as you SIM for £20, they use the Three network so I'll probably switch to them if Three try to hike up the price of the original SIM. One thing I will say, if you're with Virgin in the UK and you want to cancel, make sure you get an email confirmation of the cancellation after you've put the phone down. The foreign call centre guy who I spoke too conveniently forgot to actually cancel my sub and I had to pay another month and give them another month's notice before it was cancelled. I got a refund and a compensation payment of £50 but it was a fanny about that took months of speaking to different departments and threatening to complain to the ombudsman. I later found out that Virgin staff work on commission and if they can stop you cancelling and sweet talk you round to staying, they get some kind of bonus. I guess the guy I originally spoke too didn't want to frick up his figures for the month. So, make sure you get that cancellation confirmation on the same day or give them a call back.

This, I know there's at least a paid app that will let you see actual db readings on your phone. Ideally you'll want no lower than -67 db in any of the places you'll be using wifi. And remember db is a logarithmic curve, so although -67 db is fairly good, -72 db is unusable.
Also for 5 gig wifi, your antenna positioning matter. Each antenna radiates out like a donut, so if you have a 2 story house, position some of your antennas to cover the other floor. Don't just have them all straight up.
Also remember that one slow connection will often affect the other connections, as the AP will use more air time to transmit and receive to the user with poor signal, this will take air time away from other devices with better signal.

The average normalgay doesn't need more than 25mbps but if you're a power user, gamer or use it for work, the faster the better.
