Is a Chromebook ok for basic computer stuff? Internet, watching videos, that kind of thing?

Is a Chromebook ok for basic computer stuff? Internet, watching videos, that kind of thing? I guess maybe using a drawing tablet would be the most intensive thing I'd use it for. Thanks.

They're basically just bigger versions of phones wtihout any of the useful things on a phone (ie GPS/ high res camera). Get a foldable phone instead.

Gps useful? Are you so moronic you don't know where you are? Camera? Do you have the memory of a jellyfish?

Yeah but a refurbished business laptop is going to be better and more compatible. Maybe battery life is better on good chromebooks.

I am using one and I am loving it. I got the cheapest Mediatek device available and even this shit lasts for hours on a single charge and you can do enough and more than what you pay for.
It can even play Genshin Impact which my phone which is even more expensive can't though there's no keyboard support(They say they will bring it in the future).
I don't even bother to open my work laptop for few weeks now because all they ask for me to do is minor bug fixes and this device is more than enough for that.

Downsides I can think of after almost few weeks of use
      >Low storage space, mine's only 128 gb
Though there's expandable memory slot in my device
      >Aforementioned most Android games having lack of keyboard support
Which they say is being worked on via game dashboard which will allow you to map keys to certain touch gestures(might not even be an issue if you are buying one of those tablet types)
      >No way to mount my luks encrypted hard disk without some hackery using the Linux container
      >Some programs I rely on for work such as Dbeaver or Postman seems to have no arch64 builds
I compensate by just using the extensions in Visual Studio Code which isn't the best
      >Far less customizability options for UI or system than even Windows and maybe Mac OS

Mind ask you which Chromebook is that? I've been wanting to get an ARM laptop for a while now.

      Lenovo Slim 3

I use an Acer Chromebook 311 with a Mediatek MT8183 and 4GB RAM. It works very well for basic tasks. It's fanless, cool, and the battery life is basically all-day. ChomeOS + ARM is limiting, though.

wow i need a cheap portable laptop. can these run unbuntu? i just want to surf and have good battery but really light

Ubuntu + battery life doesnt really go together

I'd buy an x86 laptop instead if you want to be able to do a lot with it. A lot of stuff just doesn't work on ARM. It really is just a web browser. If you can't do it in Chrome, then you're probably not doing it.

I got mine for around 180$. It was on sale and I got the 8 gb model.
        >can these run unbuntu?
Probably not lol. Linux especially Ubuntu is a very resource intensive OS and will shit the bed on these specs. Though there's a light Linux container available based on Debian in the developer settings with which I am running Visual Studio Code(I work as a web developer primarily based on Node JS frameworks so it might not be the ideal choice for other developers).

I am currently using an EOL Dell 3120 Chromebook 4gb ram/16gb emmc, exactly right now. It a 2015 model, refurbished, for only $20. And this are all my tabs im currently hoarding in my current browsing session. None of my tabs are suspended. Even with this many tabs, switching would only take a split second.

I hate to say this, and IQfy will also hate to hear this: but somehow, Chrome OS is way lighter than any Linux distros (with GUI), even Arch. I have a Thinkpad with roughly the same specs (4gb ram) and yet it cant even load half as much tabs as my Chromebook without stuttering and tabs being suspended.

I'm not certain. I gave my sister a Chromebook for shitposting with Debian + XFCE installed. I did some testing before and after Chrome OS, mostly on page load time and general snappiness. I would say Chrome OS is a bit faster because it doesn't have too many things running on background, but nothing big. If you are autistic you will definitely feel the difference but after a few days of using it, it will be gone.

Considering that’s basically what Chromebooks are designed for, I’d say that you should definitely consider looking into one.

I’d suggest $200-$300 range, that way it’s sturdy and reliable, but at the end of the day it’s a Chromebook, so specs don’t really matter.

    You’re welcome, OP!

I had one, cheapest model as my main unit back in 2015-2016 which i got for $199. The CPU was outdated for its time (celeron n2840). And i did many things on it. Surfing online, creating office documents, pdfs, spreadsheets, power point, listening to music, torrenting and watching TV shows...

Sometimes it was painfully slow but it was doable.

    It's not great
However, my sister got a Surface Go for free, Windows ran like dogshit, linux was pretty unusable, so I put this FydeOS on that shit and it flies. If I only had basic needs I'd go for that.

You need at least 4gb of RAM for modern web.

I recently opened an old N3050 one to reseat the battery connector to discover it had an M.2 SSD slot.
Would have been nice to know when I actively used it but Linux fit fine on the 32GB eMMC.
