buying a desktop and a laptop is literally more expensive than only buying a laptop

Absolutely not, but it will cause tremendously more.
The morden workstation laptops are already rivalling desktop-grade performance. The only gripe I personally have is that I've never felt the warmth of a woman.

Macs don't have 256-bit FMACs yet, look it up.

            >"AVX2 (also known as Haswell New Instructions) expands most integer commands to 256 bits and introduces new instructions. They were first supported by Intel with the Haswell processor, which shipped in 2013."

a 4080m is literally faster than an m2 ultra or m3 max, and 16 real cpu cores that clock up to 5ghz are the real deal means 7zip and cpu encoding is always faster

That's not my point, my point is, WHY ARE YOU COMPARING ANYTHING TO A MAC, COMPARE IT TO A HIGHEST END DESKTOP YOU DICKWAD

have fun carrying a full tower around with you goober, even if you could build a comparable rig for $500 less you still have to lug it around like a chump

go find a mini pc that competes with a desktop, you cant, but laptops can and theyre even better

If you compare anything with that garbage, sure a high-end laptop can do for anything. Primarily vidya.
Even the best laptop got crippled by a cheap rtx and lower voltages like what you posted. And they're the first to die because of overheating.

I want to buy a keyboard so I can use my laptop with the lid down. Problem is, I think my external monitor is dying (the top and bottom of the screen flicker for a few minutes after turning it off for like twenty minutes and back on). So I'll probably have to buy a monitor too. This sucks for me because I'm poor and especially because I have never touched a woman.

It depends what said person uses the desktop for. If all you do on the desktop is browse the web and consume content then yeah. Even if you play video games a lot it depends what the games you’re playing require. However, laptop keyboard and trackpad experience tends to be pretty poor for gaming. That’s not to say you can’t just hook up a keyboard, mouse, and high refresh rate monitor. I doubt you wanted a reasonable nuanced take on this though.

Absolutely not. Laptops are trash. Always have been and always will be.

My wife's work laptop (provided by her employer) is an M2 Max with 64 GB of RAM. For what she does it's far better than a desktop cause she can take it with her. It all just depends on what you're trying to do.

I use my laptop as a desktop, and only start up the desktop pc to play games on windows
having lower specs keeps me in check so I don't open 200 tabs and have 50 windows everywhere
just one monitor, mouse and keyboard and a clean interface

Depends on a task. Laptop CPUs are severely behind desktop in performance.

For piss-ass women's office "work" that involves sending a few emails, opening a few PDFs, talking on the phone a little bit, then fricking around on the internet the rest of the day? No, it's perfect for that bullshit.

For real work that involves processing power? Yes, of course, but certain ~~*types*~~ will still force laptop use in this case.

What real work do you do that involves more processing power than a laptop can provide? I run a shitload of docker containers on my M2 Max MBP and it's honestly on par with my desktop for that.

The computer you want always costs $3,000. It was true in 1980 and it's true today.

True but $3000 in 1980 would be like spending $12k today.

These days you can play modern games on a laptop and do workstation computing (rendering, etc), but they necessarily have shitty thermal performance, which translates into throttled computing performance and shortened part lifespans. Thermal throttling means that laptops have never and most likely will never perform at the same speed as a desktop with superior cooling. It's not unusual for a laptop under heavy use to have part failures within two years, whereas a desktop with reasonable cooling can easily expect 5+ years of life.

If you use a laptop for light workloads, which is 99% of business, then a modern laptop will work just fine. With daily use it will probably still have battery problems in less than 3 years, but with a battery replacement or using it plugged in it will continue to function for much longer. Like most people these days, I have a desktop for home/gaming and a laptop for business.

At this point I would recommend a tablet with an external keyboard for business. A laptop is mid-tier stuff and could be a b***h to move around all day.

Depends what you need to get done. You are going to have a VERY bad time if you plan on doing anything CPU intensive that uses AVX, especially AVX-512 (ie emulation, blender, video encoding).

I try to get all my normie friends and family members to buy laptops instead of desktops.
I'm the one they always call when they have an issue and I rather have them come to me then having to visit them.

You'll never get the performance of a high end desktop.
But for normie use a laptop is good enough.
And with a USB-C dock it's really easy to connect everything.

I love laptops. Idk why, just mesmorized by the all in one factor, portability to an extent, rtc. I have 3 of them. One of them is pretty fast the other two are older toshiba and hp models. They're snappy with Linux but windows slows them down considerably. I always plug a mouse unless I'm just doing one quick task. I've never made a server so I was thinking of turning one of them into a personal server. I also have these all in one pcs that I got at the swapytmtmeet I might use instead.

A laptop is just like a desktop PC that constantly throttles performance because it's about to melt its own solder joints - and it's by design.
The specs are a lie and everyone is fine with that.

I’ve never been happy trying to use a laptop as if it was a desktop. Hooking it up to the monitor makes me expect better performance, more ports, more utility than I get out of the laptop. So I use both a high end laptop and a desktop so on the go I don’t have a big dip in performance but I have a high utility computer when I need it

No I'm sure it'll just be two more weeks until the desktop has died to phones, uh I mean tablets, oh no sorry I mean laptops. Any minute now..

If you have basic needs that would probably be satisfied by a frickin Core 2 Duo, then a laptop will do fine.
