Yes, it's terrible because it uses the cooled air to cool it's self so it's not cooling you
if you must, get one with two pipes, one for intake and one for outtake so it's not wasting the cool of your room

Even better if you can find one that heats and put it outside with the pipes inside so you get an even cooler room, then insulate the pipes with industrial insulation for even more chill, add that insulation to your walls, windows and doors to make your room a walk in refrigerator!

I have one close, but I have high quality noise canceling headphones and listen to some music. Can't hear it.

if you are like in 1/3 health, a fan or two is sufficient

Those things are stupid inefficient. Get a window unit instead.

Those are loud as shit and really inefficient bc the condenser unit is inside with the air you want to cool instead of outside.
    Literally just get mini split.

It's just a diy A/C where they give you the condenser and evaporator in separate "split" modules so you can put them wherever you need.

I used one for a year or so and it wasnt very loud, actually made kind of a pleasant white noise to sleep with. Not terribly expensive to run. The annoying part is setting up your window to use the hose without getting leaks

The single hose version are very inefficient. If you really need to get one of these, get one with to hoses.

efficiency does not matter when youre just cooling a single room. This is the textbook definition of pennywise and pound foolish

People will be able to tell you're autistic just by your windows.

I got the cheapest window unit Walmart sold a few years ago and it just werks, my bedroom is pretty small and it cools it down really fast.

Just don't blow it directly at your face. That can give you pneumonia.

        >Just don't blow it directly at your face. That can give you pneumonia.
I sit less than a meter in front of my window... usually I have the vent pointed away from me but when I'm really hot I'll point it directly at me. my left-hand side faces the window

single hose is about 10-20% less efficient but also doesn't require you to open doors in the house as it creates natural low pressure inside.

You have to get a mini-SHIT because ecelebman says so
These are worse than central air and good window units, but only delusional people will claim they're useless or wastes of time. People are moronic. The unit intakes air from the room and exhausts heat outside.

In the building where I (I'm not OP btw) live these are not an option unless you use it on a window that hangs over a balcony. People used to install them incorrectly and they'd fall on cars all the time. This might be the case for a lot of apartments

I own one of these. It stands all the way across the room and THE DAMN THING IS SO FRICKING LOUD I CAN'T THINK

Same. I have mine connected via wifi to my google home routine so it turns it on/off automatically for 15 minutes every hour.

I didn't think about that, you definitely need to properly screw in the mount for a window unit in if you can't support it from outside, even tiny ones like that Midea.

Also if OP or anyone else is considering a window unit, the shitty accordion part of the mount they come with is always garbage that doesn't last a summer - cut out your own mount and insulate it so you aren't letting the hot air and bugs in.

They are alright if you want to cool down your room before falling asleep. The downside is noise and lower pressure in the room which causes the room to suck in air that is warm from the outside. My unit is consuming around 1kw per hour at max settings. The gold standard is a split, even two tube falls flat against it. If you own get a split, simple as.

I bought a cheap ass portable AC unit like in OP pic because I was tired of waking up covered in sweat. I've been using it the past couple weeks and I found out the reason why I wasn't getting good sleep before is because it was too hot. with this thing on I'm comfy as frick and I can easily sleep 10+ hours and wake up refreshed. frick hot climates, we were not made for this shit.
    >it's loud
yes but the noise doesn't bother me. it's like a loud fan with a bit of extra metal noise.

Look up Saddle AC units, much more quiet and efficient compared to normal window AC units

they aren't even that expensive, $500 is nothing.

The 8000 BUT in-room unit I bought was $220. the 12000BTU in-wall unit my landlord installed retails for somewhere under $300. What kind of moron do you have to be to willingly pay a premium for an inferior unit?

I have three single-hose units and they suck (literally). Dual hose is better, window is best.
