Is it really worth it to write a book ?

Is it really worth it to write a book ? I'm doing a master degree in political philosophy and been wanting to write a book for years, that would articulate pretty deep philosophical ideas inside of an accessible novel. It's something important to me but I can't get myself to start, because there's so many shit books released each days by pretentious people, and i'm scared that my book might end up being one of those crappy books that no one reads with no real meaning besides boost it's author's ego. Should I go for it or is it useless nowadays to write a book ?

Non-accessible ideas in an accessible novel..

Yeah it has already been done before. Every novel of Camus are accessible versions of his philosophical ideas, even though there's always some loss since you can't be as precise as in a philosophy book.

What makes you think you have “deep philosophical ideas”? Give us an example of one.

I would like to restitute Machiavel's conception of power inside a novel with political intrigues. I want to make accessible the true conception of power of Machiavel's which isn't just cold cynism as some might think it is inside of a nice story that would explore the meaning of power inside of society

I think it is worth it, just about to start into my third novel and think I figured out the general idea for it last night, ended up going through the night sketching ideas. If it ends up with no real meaning then that is your own fault.

Also, learn to ignore the trolls.

I am betting that has been done quite a few times, which is not to suggest it should not be done again, plenty of room there. Go visit a few libraries and ask the fiction librarians for novels which build off of Machiavelli, they should be able to give you a good list of works to study which should give you a better idea of how and how not to execute it in a novel and keep you from naively rewriting something which has already been written. This is generally my first step in writing once I have the general idea, few months spent studying how others have approached the topic and the criticism/reception of those works.

            >ask the fiction librarians for novels which build off of Machiavelli,
be sure to explain your goals, tell them you are thinking about writing a novel and what your goals are for that novel. The more information you give them the better the recommendations they will be able to give you.

Thank you for the advice, but don't you ever get the feeling that your work is just another worthless piece of media that will be a forgotten waste of paper in a few years ? How do you surpass that feeling ?

You gotta just choose to write anyway. Whatever is causing you to have that feeling about writing could cause you to have that feeling about doing anything. You’re going to die one day and whether you’re remembered for doing anything in particular while you were alive is to some degree out of your hands.

It might be, or it might be a massive success or become a success long after I am dead or maybe just be very meaningful to a few people and help them or influence them to try. Or I might be hit by a car and bleed to death in the middle of the road before I finish it. I used to have massive doubts before I started exploiting librarians and researching how others have dealt with the topic and more often then not that research causes me to completely dump the idea. But eventually it gets me to the point I am confident that there is worth in my idea even if it is vastly different than when I originally intended.

I’m more interested in knowing whether you think a master in political philosophy/science is worth it.

I think fear that a book will turn out bad is a bad reason not to write a book. If it comes out bad, just edit until it’s decent or don’t publish it. Haven’t you ever read Rousseau, Lenin, etc? They admit right off the bat their prized works are shit.

It's worth it when you live in a country with free education and when you're passionate about your subject. Nothing about free education is ever worthless.

But you might be right I shall concentrate myself on doing a good work rather than being obsessed with it being forgettable crap

Doesn’t your master’s require a thesis or any sort of publication? My advice would be to write a good publication for your program and then try to write a book.

It's required but only in the 2nd year. For now I don't have anything to write before next year

Well, you could still try to cut your teeth on small publications, journalistic pieces, essays, short stories etc before you write a whole novel.

I’d say do it for the love of doing it. Expect no money or fame: go ahead if you plan to publish it online for free.
