all I know is that some cybersecurity roles are offshore proof because you need a US security clearance (requires US citizenship). I think there is an appeal in gov IT jobs because they don't like to change and would prefer on-site local shit instead of remote teams in scandinavia or eastern europe. There is some safety in it.

Also, right now we cannot trust AI for critical IT shit at the moment. We've got half a decade to a decade to transition into IT before it gets super saturated from ex-programmers becoming obsolete and seeking something else in tech. Hahah we're so fricked bro!!! What are all these CS grads gonna go?? FRICK!!

my current university keeps telling us that we can still get jobs despite the advances of AI.

They've said it so much, that I think it is having an opposite effect and people are losing faith in the school.
People who had graduated 2 years ago have still yet to find a job in their field.
Many came back to the school to work as TAs or IAs.

IT was never viable in the long term.
It has always been about making things automated and efficient.
At some point we will reach peak automation, and peak efficiency.
No one else will be needed.

All other professions and jobs in history have been about training up individuals to create or accomplish things. Which was limited by the growth of the society as a whole.

Now a few people can basically automate entire industries, without any regard for the growth or well being of society.

We're on a crash course to hell.

      >finance cant be automated (requires human networking)
      >medicine cant be automated (requires human acttivity in person)
      >law cant be automated (requires humans in the legal system)
we've fricked ourselves. Oh my god it's not even funny ahah

Finance can be automated, in many ways it already is, as the most successful brokers are the ones who have AI run their portfolios.
Medicine will 100% be automated eventually, but is only stifled due to regulations.
Same for law, the AI judges and justice system would be far more fair and just than human lawyers and judges. Again, the issue is the same as regulations and rules are being made to go against it.

        Even bioengineering is being automated.

Open sourced AI crafted artificial wombs are on the horizon.
We will be able to make the "perfect" woman within the next 10 years.

You know, the funny thing is. From the limited research i've read, it ironically seems like ML jobs are actually really small even now. There is a reason why jobs in the AI/ML field require a masters or a Phd before you get anything serious. Maybe this could change and we get jobs opened up for people with Bachelors but like.

Machine Learning is not the new Computer Science despite it overtaking it, there aren't the same quantity of jobs for it. Again I might be wrong but that's what I'm getting. God, someone tell me I'm wrong?

ML is insanely hard. You need to be great at programming while also being great at mathematics. Almost no programmer/engineer knows his way around advanced math.

There is just too much demand due to hype, but even then the amount of jobs should be very niche, and the amount of people able to perform them should keep being extremely limited as well.

At best we'll get some intermediate ML tier where people essentially do data analysis/engineering, dabble with python libraries and call themselves ML engineers on Linkedin.

If this happens, we'll see a similar situation to what we currently have in web and other fields, where fresh code monkeys do not really fit the bill and take to everywhere to complain about their situation.

not really qualified to talk about this but I’m a codelet who is learning Python right now just because I find AI/ML so fascinating and want to work in AI related fields. Jobs/internships are sparse and not even internships take me (for obvious reasons). Though I hope with AI expanding and becoming more prevalent that I can join in one day too.

What? Are you moronic? Why is it bad to replace all man power with automation, free NEET for everyone. And if the elites doesn't do that then I'd rather die fighting in a revolution than live being a wage slave. They have broken the social contract, now they must pay.

        Anon...

I don't think you fully understand what is happening right now.
We have big companies backing AI where the power is in the hands of a relative few.
Have you not been keeping up with robotics?

Once they replace all their wage slaves, they aren't just going to make life easy for everyone and let them NEET. They are going to see the useless eaters as obsolete workers that are to be replaced by their new efficient hyper obedient workers.

There will be no revolution against a single CEO and his army of weaponized AI.

Right now, anyone who is AWARE of what is going on, should be working to open source and prevent the accumulation of AI in the hands of a few.

We know from ancient history books, that something similar happened before.
Many would be correct to assume it was divine intervention, because once the gap of power widens to that extent, everything changes.

The only way around this and ever was is money. You just need to make money, there is nothing or any other solution or law that will come along and just give UBI for everyone because AI made their jobs obsolete or some shit. At BEST you get some sort of stipend to pay for food if shit gets really bad (im talking about if general white collar jobs get automated: accountants, clerks, etc; not just programmers).

I dont know man, maybe you could leverage AI to create your own LLC and sell the software yourself with these AI tools to substitute for marketers, accountants and whatnot. There are ways around this, it's just going to be difficult and the hash reality is that people were always right that, it's about WHO you know and not WHAT you now. People that can network are safe and will be cushioned with jobs that will become more limited as time goes on.

          Brutal fricking reality.

Social Networking is somewhat of a farce, a combination of a few useful people and leeches.

The issue now, is that useful people are still probably going to be used, but the leeches won't need other leeches.

Anyone with any knowledge of AI is already making money.
We have people selling AI generated art already and making a steady stream of money.
Others are using AI to solve problems and make money.
Do you know you can "tutor" for students right now, using AI to answer their questions extremely fast?

The AI is going to upend everything.
People like to use the cars replacing horses analogy.
You have to understand, this is computers replacing humans.

Do horses still exist? Yeah as pets and for use in hobbies.
Will humans still exist? Yeah as pets and for use in hobbies.

Part of me wants to make sure AI is opensourced without end, but at the end of the day, only so many of us are going to actually use the AI or further improve the AI.
Everyone else is going to become literally useless people only allowed to exist at the whims of everyone who can provide for them.

Think of it like the movie Wall-E, nobody gives a frick about getting a job when you don't need one, only a slave would feel restless about not having work to do.

The real deal is getting into IT administration for medical or utilities like gas, electric, or even shit like waste disposal. You'll be lucky to get close to 100k even at the upper levels but you'll be safe for the next 10 - 15 years.

at this point, this is my plan.

      >get a 40 hour "safe" job
      >dedicate 20 hours to side-business

I dont give a shit about these high risk, high stress 200k jobs anymore. I just realized I don't take stress that well, and I'd kill myself. So I want to take it easy and do something I can do at my own time. Maybe I'll put 20 hours into something that won't make money, but I wont lose hair over it. Frick it dawg, frick gayMAN unless it's for 2 years to get a good nest egg or something IG.

Yeah it's pretty viable. I work enterprise IT and don't consider myself that smart but with the amount of dumbasses around in IT alone I'll always have a job or at least long enough to retire.

The average person isn't smart enough to figure out github so it's hard to imagine a world where IT jobs don't exist and don't pay decently.

Even if/when AI takes over more stuff someone has to maintain that shit and that isn't going to be the first thing AI replaces because it's too janky and niche.
