The point is that you dont count the beer cans. One VB or fourteen becomes the same thing.

What the frick does "decolonise maths" even mean?

      Anonymous

I hope it means they study how different civilisations and cultures all develop different forms of mathematics. e.g. ancient egypt used base 12 instead of our 10, which is why we have 24 hours, 12 months, etc

        >12 months, etc

If there were 10 months in a year then women would only have 10 periods per year.

no it's not exactly 12 per year. we have 12 months a year because of Julius Caesar

Study, teach, and integrate mathematical developments and techniques from non-European cultures and schools of thought into modern mathematics.

Different cultures have developed and encoded math differently before the global shift toward Eurocentrism and it's for the best to go back and make sure nothing of value is being or was lost.

The idea extends beyond "pure math" to shit like physics and mechanics and I highly doubt every local craft has been studied for its underlying features.

Beyond that, there may be applications for abstract systems to be found within pure math as well, even if it's only models and teaching tools.

whatever mathematical traditions native american tribes may have had is interesting in its own right and deserving of study, but not going to contribute to algebraic topology. modern math is too developed that there's any real avenue for this.

So what is of primary importance in Indigenous mathematics? Let me guess, it's something like "community" or "lived experiences" or something else that has likewise actually nothing to do with mathematics, isn't it?

      >“What the general public think of as mathematics tends to be whatever they learned (or, more likely, did not learn) at school. But in many Indigenous societies, mathematics is lived from when you are born to when you rejoin your ancestors,” Professor Ball says.
      >“It’s about formalised relationships within human society and with every element of the environment. Everyone is taught them. And the levels go up from birth to adulthood, as you are ready for more knowledge. This mathematics permeates every aspect of life.”

    >“One interesting example that we are currently investigating is the use of chiral symmetry to engineer a long-distance smoke signalling technology in real time,” Professor Ball says. “If you light an incense stick you will see the twin counter-rotating vortices that emanate − these are a chiral pair, meaning they are non-superimposable mirror images of each other.”

It's true. Math has moved on from numbers to symbols. There are even jokes among mathematicians that highlight the demoted status of numbers, such as the joke where Grothendieck thinks 57 is prime.
