I remember I was 16 and consumed King all over. I spoke to an old psud who looked at me funny for saying I was a big fan of King's. Now at 23 I have definetly broadened my tastes and have basically taken place of the old pseud. People shouldn't be mocked for getting into reading, you gotta start at entry level and eventually find better writers, like HP Lovecraft for example, who King introduced me to.
I read Lovecraft before King and loved it. King is good for Black personcattle, his DT stuff is semi-ok but only for the lore. Writing is basic and often drones
I certainly don't regret reading The Shining and Pet Sematary, the latter being one of my regular October rereads. IT has some memorable passages but it's about 600 (!) pages longer than it had any right to be. Read about six or seven more King's novels which were entirely forgettable and mediocre, such as the recent Doctor Sleep. Jaunt is a great short story, and loved The Mist novella as well but the movie mogs it hard.
read the short stories 'The Jaunt' and '1408' and you decide

This. If I read Call of the Crocodile and didn’t know who it was by and you told me it was Stephen King I wouldn’t even question it. That book even had an alcoholic father as the protagonist.
yea but they’re not really anything other than entertainment. the stand is one of my favorite books but for fun narrative not because it has anything resembling deep themes or ideas
His works are a pretty mixed bag. I like some more than others, but generally he's fine. If you're looking for something serious though, I'd stay away.
The Shining, the Dark Tower series and The Green Mile are enjoyable. I've got a copy of The Stand but I haven't read it yet.
The Mist is a pretty good short story, but the rest of the collection it's from is very boring. Don't read IT, it's absolute garbage.
Most of his catalogue isn't terrible, but it's also nothing significant. You'll probably feel like you could be reading a better book, but it's decently entertaining enough for you to want to finish it.
If you aren't pirating them, I'd recommend buying used. Used king books are typically very cheap, even on the scale of used books as a while, and also tend to have cooler cover art.
Only read the Shining when I was around 20. I thought it was pretty good. Still want to read Salem's Lot because I hear a lot of King readers say it's the best one.
Up until a certain point. And even then only for low value entertainment.
Not for the literary value. For the influence on normies maybe.
Maybe if you‘re 18 and working your way toward better authors.

>better writers like lovecraft

No.
You're better off reading classy weird fiction rather than mainstream American trash.
No.
His short stories can be surprisingly good sometimes, but most of his novels are bloated with at least a hundred pages of unnecessary material
It was fun until he self-inserts. There's no concrete evidence for this, but, you could FEEL that he self-inserts
yes, go write sweet prince.
Running Man is 100 times better a cyberpunk novel than anything William Gibson ever wrote. Aside from that, he has some comfy pulp horror.
