Is this a good alternative to Discord? I don't want to use IRC, and I don't care about VOIP chat. I just want something simple and lightweight (I'm on Windows) and to try to get my friends on it.
But there are a lot of options. Do I just get the "Element" one?
XMPP.
I use Gajim on desktop, Conversations on mobile.
I don't have a mobile device, so I only care for my desktop. What is XMPP? I also don't see this "Gajim" in their lists
https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/
No, I mean, I've used IRC for over 20 years now. None of my current friends are on it and I want something people I hang out with will use, that isn't Discord. We can voip on Mumble. I also want to move my family onto it, (Matrix), since we're all distant IRL.
israeli spyware
it takes a few israelitetube videos and even the slightest amount of ambition to learn IRC homosexual
>and to try to get my friends on it.
You will most likely fail in that regard since people do not like changes. Whats your problem with discord?
Doesn't work on Windows 7 really, and I mainly use that still. I don't want to be on Windows 10 all the time, I only use it for gaming.
I'm just swamped and a bit confused by all these different clients. Are they just skins or are they fundamentally different? Because it seems like the latter. Should I just get "Element"?
>Doesn't work on Windows 7 really
Updating your OS will solve the issue.
> I don't want to be on Windows 10 all the time
Why?Whats the issue with windows 10 or 11?
>I'm just swamped and a bit confused by all these different clients
Now just imagine how confused your friends will be after seing dozens of different clients and servers.
> Are they just skins or are they fundamentally different?
>Should I just get "Element"?
Element is fine but you probably shouldnt use matrix at the first place. Most people wont really do the switch just for you and you will end up alone and frustrated. The reality is not perfect and you should just learn to cope with it. If you have something sensitive to say, just meet people in real life.
I'll try Element then, thanks.
element doesn't work on win7
matrix is fricked
>why won't this software support an almost 20 year old OS?
frick off autist, wasn't talking to you
maybe you should go to twitter or reddit so you can block people you don't like?
i don't even use win7 you fricking morons, I'm posting to help an anon.
nobody gives a frick about your useless input, useless NEET c**ts
>i-it's for someone else
Changes literally nothing. Nobody is supporting your baby duck OS that even the creator does not support anymore. Crying about a client not supporting it on behalf of someone else is even more pathetic.
cope homosexual, nobody respects you
>genuinely throwing this much of a temper tantrum because a 2024 application doesn't have support for a 2007 operating system
>uuh, uh-uuuh, no you
You need to be at least 18 to post on this site
Stop trolling. Please.
Is that where you've degraded yourself now? You're actively accusing others of trolling because your reaction to being told this software obviously isn't going to support windows fricking 7 garnered mocking responses?
element works on browser too, ya know??
https://app.element.io/
Hey, that's pretty neat! Thanks
>breathing air
Yeah but the real questions is: why do you give a frick? Take your HRT, dilate your axe wound and take your antipsychotic
Stop crying
Cry about it. There is no point or purpose in supporting the 17 year old operating system you autistically cling to because you're incapable of adapting to changes.
That sucks.
That's actually what I do to get it to work on Windows 7, but it runs like shit.
A small group that we just use as a chatroom essentially, but any time the word "IRC" is brought up people start going "But its old" "But I'm scared" "Don't hackers use that?"
That's all good information though, thank you.
I can't self host anything, I live in rural 'murikka and have third-world-tier internet.
>I can't self host anything, I live in rural 'murikka and have third-world-tier internet.
You can also pay for a server if you want, or self-host it on a VPS.
That could work. Its not like I'm a poorgay
I'll look into that then, thanks.
Yeah they have payment plants for various 'group sizes' but the cheapest will always be to pay $10 or $15 a month for a VPS or whatever with at least 2GB of RAM, install it yourself and host it there. You'll need a domain too though tbh,but you can buy one cheap if it's a meme domain like .top
why even bother using win7 when even fricking linux has better software support now
You can use discord in browser
element works on browser too, ya know??
https://app.element.io/
it sucks bro just use https://movim.eu/ with xmpp
I don't have friends so it doesnt bother me. I just use irc for talking to strangers.
xmpp:[email protected]?join
try it out
Methinks you are trolling
Switch to Linux, baby duck.
it works on win7 but you need to download old version. In my mozilla it's faster than desktop on win7.
matrix is not perfect, can be buggy when you have lots of messages, but compare to bs like discord, telegram, viber it's much better alternative if you're not normie.
>fewer features
No.
>I just want something simple and lightweight (I'm on Windows) and to try to get my friends on it.
Your friends don't care about this though, so they will continue using discord.
Depends on what you use Discord for. Do you use it for primarily chatting amongst a small group of friends? Sharing images? Reacting to things with gay emoji? Sure. Element can do all of that competently.
Element still cannot into custom emoji, and its screen sharing capabilities are subpar. Voice is fine. You can use custom stickers. Android and especially iOS client are kind of bad. Desktop is fine.
Simple and lightweight?
Matrix is neither.
I've investigated a lot of discord alternatives and honestly the best is rocketchat. Mobile clients, web clients, desktop clients, AND self hosted. Only real caveat is that you need at least 2GB RAM to host a server. Any less and it stalls hard.
Use jabber/xmpp instead. Matrix has issues with crypto, with how chats are set ups, being REALLY bloated on the backend.
doesn't matter if it doesn't have the users, as always
Bring your own users 🙂
I want voice chat. I have real friends who want to speak. We use signal for text
Glanced through a portion of this, but a lot of red squares for Element are outdated or outright wrong.
I've thought about running my own server to communicate with friends that isn't discord. Then I realized that no one wants to fricking do that. There is zero chance my friends would be willing to join an irc or whatever the frick matrix is. Just keep your discord account as anonymous as possible, only servers you should be in are those that belong to you and your friends. You can also use vencord to get most paid discord benefits.
xmpp is the easiest to host check out snikket
The problem is that everyone already has Discord. There isn't a reason to move over, this isn't like Skype where we had 30 person group chats and large group calls. We have the option to create pretty organized servers with useful stuff like screensharing. Just because I care about privacy doesn't mean my friends care about theirs enough to use a whole different app, instead of the one they already have that does the same thing and more.
>The problem is that everyone already has Discord.
no. they don't. it's as if this board's collective of morons think if they repeat something often enough it magically becomes true.
Ah yes, of course I did not count little abdul in the desert. He probably does not have access to discord. Mostly everyone in a first world country that plays vidya will be on discord. You are an out of touch boomer if you think that isn't true.

>Matrix client called C*nny
Could not make this shit up
its infested with them
cute and funny.
On the desktop you simply want Element.
On mobile, you want Element X, or to explore the alternatives.
Element X isn't up to Element functionality yet, but Element doesn't work very well on mobile.
