          Better than your 'critique.'

It is a novel borne of the modern day, by a writer who is more interested in looking intelligent to the group he's trying to impress (awards committees, the so called 'literati', etc.) than by delving inward in search of something uniquely him. It is in the same vein as that semi-autobiographical dreck so popular once, of mid 30s upper middle class writers inhabiting New York, none of whom are unaware that all they offer is self-fellating artifice. The worst part is I like Cohen's prose but he peaked at Witz, which was at least his own.

            >says nothing about the book and talks about the author and random stuff instead
Nothing you said can be addressed in any intelligent way, you are essentially making the argument of "I hate peas" which is fine but I am not your mother and I don't care if you don't like peas.

If you cannot address or defend his novel based on that critique, I suggest you find some novels where the writer puts their soul on display and devour them. Once you find such a book Cohen will be a pain to read.

What does unsupportable conjecture about the author's motives have to do with the book? That supposed critique is about his (Your?) view of literature in general and reduces literature to an affect or accessory to what ever image he is trying to cultivate.

honestly, your best bet is going to be off of any new translations of late 20th century, early 21st century world fiction.

the untranslated is fantastic source for new(ish) recs, if you haven't read his blog he goes fully into the more avant-garde and experimental side of new fiction. Some worthwhile contenders being...

      Cartarescu
      De Palol
      Sorokin
      Krasznahorkai
      Sharov
Goytisolo (Antagony is a true gem that just got a english translation)

There is no good modern anything. The appeal to books is you can stretch further beyond any medium to be with intelligent non negrified people, their works and thoughts to enjoy. Did you know that almost everyone in this satanic country supports mixed race "marriages"? Imagine reading something and assuming it's likely they want to see black chimps with women, it's laughable, surely they're moronic in all ways and not just that.

Surprised to see all the praise for Drive Your Plow. I really enjoyed it too. I should have made a discussion thread or two.

      Also from Fitzcarraldo:
      Hurricane Season – Fernanda Melchor
Tell Them of Battles, Kings and Elephants – Mathias Énard
      Zone – Énard
Rave – Rainald Goetz (you can probably skip this one if you haven't experienced/are not interested in '90s european rave culture and techno)

I'll be honest I don't know of any other quality small/independent publishing houses. Anyone care to recommend some?

Fitzcarraldo the best publisher in the UK for sure.

Feel sorry for anyone sleeping in Fernanda Melchor. Hurricane Season is ridiculously good

drive your plow over the bones of the dead was a great read, short but impactful. great prose and interesting ideas, the protagonist is pretty unique too, not often do you read something where the main character is a lonely old woman.
honestly when I'm browsing my local bookstore and I see something from this publisher I'll check it out, they seem to publish more unusual or niche ideas, not mass market drivel
