Is this some kind of a joke?

> Microsoft added Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) to let anyone run a Linux distro directly. Thanks to WSA, you don’t need to dual-boot Linux or create a virtual machine, but the feature is limited to Windows Terminal. Microsoft understands that some of you may be uncomfortable with the command line and is creating a GUI for managing Linux distros.
This is moronic
Why not just install loonix?
What are the advantages of doing this?
I understand if you are a 12-year old and you're home-schooled, and your mom wants you to use free software or something, but why this?
> the only way to interact with a Linux distro on Windows is by using the Terminal.

3d performance is terrible in wsl. You probably get better performance using VirtualBox even without gpu passthrough. It's also very buggy.

    >WSL
    People still use this garbage?
Yes, I like having no freedom over networking behavior. I like having an inefficient RDP window for every X or Wayland application.
I'm so glad I have a choice in distros, as long as they populate paths WSL requires you to have.
Let's not forget the ultimate problem, you're stuck with whatever shit kernel M$ gives you.

Tivoized Linux. Stallman was right again.

This. WSL is fricking stupid. W10 WSL kernels are outdated 4.4 version.

Just install Linux and forget about the trash WSL is.

you unemployed tards are missing the point. it's not suppose to replace a proper linux OS, it's meant to give you a mostly-functional terminal.
if you're stuck on windows on a locked down work PC. same value proposition as docker for windows or osx.

why not? i can just run windows and install everything as intended then if i need a niche linux program i open linux in windows without rebooting. this just eliminates the need for installing linux

      > the only reason to install Linux is to use niche Linux software
Wtf niche Linux software do you use that doesn't exist on Windows? The real reason to use Linux is to get away from the garbage that is Windows and Macos. Yeah, Linux distros aren't as polished for desktop use, but the rough edges can be sanded down by anyone with the computer skills to follow tutorials.

WSL2 is literally a VM. they wasted a lot of resources on a moronic idea, who knows why.
of course Windows users, being the tech illiterate morons, think WSL2 is somehow different than a VM... and that they are using a special version of Linux, and not just a barely customized version of ubuntu

Yes, if you have a job this is convenient because now your employer can make you use a managed computer (windows) while still providing you with all of the Linux tools needed for the job. Unironically a Linux killer in enterprises with high security and regulatory compliance requirement.

The advantage is that it is already rightly integrated into the host and transparent to the user, out of the box. No need to worry about installing VMware, Virtualbox, client-host integration libraries, port forwarding, etc. You also get native file system access straight from windows explorer.
You get all the advantages of a Linux VM with none of the setup.

        installing Virtualbox is easy af.
as I said, Windows users are just moronic and lazy.

Then you need to install provision a virtual hard drive, provision for VM, allocate memory, install your Linux distro, install host extensions, configure port forwarding. None of this is difficult but it takes away precious developer time, which is expensive and could have been spent actually developing products for the company. It also requires administrator access, expensive licenses, and requires the user to manage most of the installation and maintenance himself.

With WSL you just open the terminal, type wsl --install and you are done. This is a huge time saver and makes centralised management a lot easier. I know this is difficult to understand for a NEET such as yourself, but to a company, all of these things are very valuable. And as a software developer myself, I would much rather spend my time writing code than figuring out why Virtualbox corrupted my VM image every few months.

you know you can download and install ready-made VMs, right? a few clicks (or two commands, plus the download itself) and you are done.
just admit it: Windows users are moronic and lazy.

            >He thinks IT wants to manage a list of pre-approved VMs for different Devs with different tools chains.
Yes, you just type wsl -d "distroname" --install

You need to understand that users in a corporate environment don't have infinite time on their hands to rice their distros.

            >anon... you are doing that when you download and run VMs from microsoft lmao
The key thing here is that I am downloading them from a trusted source (Microsoft).
            >ah, yes, the moronic jannies of the tech world. they won't let me do whatever the frick I want with MY machine?
Your NEET is showing. This is not YOUR machine. This is a corporate asset, on a corporate network. IT is there to manage all these tools for you, enabling you to work more efficiently, and prevent morons such as yourself from compromising the company network.
            >corporate environment
            >who cares? I ask my employers to give me a laptop and wipe anything that comes installed on it as soon as I get it running.
And this is why you are unemployed. IT has a responsibility to keep the corporate environment secure. And giving admin privileges to anyone who wants it is one of the biggest sources of compromise. If your company has any kind of regulatory compliance requirements, you will not get admin privilege. And I know that many companies employ moronic monkeys in their IT department, but if management is not stupid, IT will actually be staffed by competent people. I have never had any reason to complain about our IT department because we are a serious tech company and most of our IT employees are competent. And the good thing about it is that even if I can solve an issue myself, I don't need to waste my own time troubleshooting it myself. I just go to IT and it gets fixed in less than 30 minutes. Because it's their job to fix it, and because they have probably seen the same issue from a dozen users and already know exactly how to fix it without me having to waste my time figuring it out.

actually, you are wrong. it's people like me the ones who take care of this shit. you IT fricks are a a bunch of fricking moron that understand nothing about security (or anything) and follow cargo cults.

            >I work in infosec
So do I. All our pentesters get a separate computer for their engagements. Said computers are blacklisted on the corporate network.

            >it's people like me the ones who take care of this shit.
Then I feel sorry for your company's security posture if you are in charge of security.

            >you IT fricks are a a bunch of fricking moron that understand nothing about security (or anything) and follow cargo cults.
Nice projection. Once again, if a company is actually serious about security, they don't hire clowns like you to manage their IT systems.

tbh I actually raised a glass to you IT morons recently - you pulled the plug on so much dev infra at my current job in the name of "security" that my team no longer have to maintain the old legacy shit we once did, since we literally can't access it or run the proprietary software required. there are services running in prod that have ongoing P3 issues that literally can't be fixed due to our genius "secure" IT pajeets - not my problem any more.

WSL is for 2 kinds of people, devs and normies
Devs need Linux tools, Microsoft can't do anything about that. They've tried over and over, but nobody wants to use their shitty packages over reliable make and gcc, so they're letting you run Linux dev tools on windows now without messing with mingw and shit, hoping that you would rather use windows.
Normies who might be tempted to try Linux now can use it via WSL, realize that it sucks (because WSL sucks, but they assume that it's Linux that sucks) and get back to grudgingly using windows
Remember to think like a multi billion dollar company. The customer is an idiot who needs you to tell them how to spend their money
