Nihilism is unfounded and demoralizing propaganda.
Absurdism is founded, in the sense that there is something such as the Absurd from an ontological point of view, not necessarily that it infects the whole rest of knowledge, but Camus was not interested enough in its metaphysical expression, and Sartre, who was, took enough wrong positions right from the start to invalidate everything else.
Husserl had already identified the Absurd as the source of all metaphysics much earlier. > “...the irrationality of the transcendental fact that emerges in the constitution of the factual world and of spiritual life: thus, metaphysics in a new sense.”
It's more of a rationalization based on the error of believing Sisyphus to represent something other than a Man being punished; if we take the Sisyphus story and put it into Western Christian theology then the Sisyphus could be translated into Adams punishment, perhaps..
In the old world this was anyway understood as the obvious idiocy of a person doing something the wrong way and refusing to change their plans. Comparable to Atlas in the story of Hercules, where Atlas isn't a noble figure but a buffoon who only believes he's holding up the world by holding a boulder.
true.
Difficult labor is a pleasure when you're conditioned to it. I worked for six hours in 100ºF heat today and didn't want to stop.
p.s. this thread isn't for Black folk.
Although I feel the same way, manual work is healthy.
"why does it pain you to see me working with my hands?"

Do you have a source for this? I've never once come across this interpretation of the myth and I can't find anything similar via a cursory Googling.

Myths are supposed to be interpreted, anon, but sure:
It's implied that he's comical figure because Hercules tricks him with the boulder, and it's implied Atlas was only ever holding a boulder - and not the world - beause duh, Hercules and Atlas were both in the world at the time. I read it as more a comment on the false burdens that people carry around that they believe are important: self imposed hardships of no consequence.
I'm just failing to see how oblivion should be so bad. I know an idealist could make an ontological argument that the Good subsists in Being and therefore oblivion being the furthest distance possible from the Good had ought be reviled. But don't existentialists, particularly Camus, reject such metaphysics? In what exactly does existence constitute a good in itself?
Its incredibly frustrating how many people only know this one quote and maybe a wiki article and interpolate a philosophy from it without ever reading the damn text. Its a short essay, you can finish it in a few days. please read the actual essay.
The whole essay is literally an attempt to outline every form of philosophical cope possible and avoid it. The Sisyphus parable at the end is the one possible way he sees of facing the unsolvable rift between a world refusing to be meaningful, and a consciousness refusing to be meaningless without trying to give up either of the two. The parable should not be read as submitting to meaninglessness and just going on until you are happy, the point is to continue the struggle against all odds until the struggle itself becomes meaningful.
if you take a few quotes and use them to guess the contents of the rest of the essay, i think thats interpolation. Extrapolation would be if you use those few quotes to guess what Camus would think of people saying dumb things on an anonymous image board.
it's true that you tend to feel more alive, less depressed when you're occupied with manual labour. you don't have the time nor the disposition to introspect.
doesn't mean you can't achieve the same result by not doing anything, you just need to follow your conscience.
Yes, and thats a good thing
stupid frogposter.
nihilism vs absurdism

Absurdism isn’t a philosophy
nihilism self-refutes

1. I work for myself on my own land
2. I SAID NO Black folk
>2. I SAID NO Black folk
cool it with the anti-semitic remarks.
Striving for greatness =/= being a wagecuck
People will hate on this because they can’t differentiate work from slavery anymore.
Pfft. I work the Mississippi fields 11 hours a day, and search for gold by night.

I worked 10 and I wanted to kill myself lol

The Greeks were trying to cope with Sophists, Poets, Rhetoricians...
Not really. Existence itself is the one true joy, and its not like his punishment is actual torture or oblivion

Oh ho ho ho hooooo. I think you mean extrapolate, sweaty.

Yes, you said exactly the same as the quote but longer and less eloquent
less eloquent sure, but hopefully harder to misinterpret as 'cope'
Well, that's right, might read the essay then
>the point is to continue the struggle against all odds until the struggle itself becomes meaningful
Cope

>introspect
This is due to the outrospection inherent in constructive and practical tasks. A valuable thing for any educated person to keep in mind.
When i had a manual labor job i felt pretty damn motivated to get a better job because i fricking hated doing it.
I liked my job but I realized i couldnt make a living on it. Then I decided to go to school for philosophy. Hahahahaha I am so fricked.
when I had one, I knew it wasn't going to be forever. but I felt really alive after work. like a natural cocaine high.
>more alive, less depressed when you're occupied with manual labour
Tell that to slaves and minimum wage workers.
why did we invent philosophy
We didnt
Do you mean we discovered it? Or do you mean "we" as in people here, on this board?
sciences aren't invented, they're discovered.
Philosophy isn't a science.
No, materialism is.

Stupid bootlicker. Shouldn’t you be in Ukraine?
Gosh, I didn't expect anyone to prove the point that quickly.
