The market for electronics has shrunk because so many separate devices are rolled into smartphones now.
They don't even sell clock radio anymore (in NA market at least). Sad.
It's run by hardware designers with eccentric tastes. All their products look extremely based, but have no mass-market appeal and are kind of terrible to use.
They make decent niche-ish phones, would definitively buy if only they were sold in my country and not expensive as frick though.
The biggest complaint about their phones on the internet is

idk how much I care about those because in my experience they only add bloat and slow down my devices
Besides that, they are a bit on the expensive side and I'm concerned about their long screen aspect ratio
That being said they might be my next phone because of aux port, micro sd slot, no notch or punchole and they're an established non-chink Japanese company which is giving me hipster boners
I would totally go for a Sony phone if I were the type to spend $1000 on a phone. I just don't consider them worth that much since I mostly use my PC.
My complaint is no ROM support. For 1400€ I expect either GrapheneOS, official LineageOS or SailfishOS.
They're expensive, quality is poor, support sucks, software sucks, the list goes on

Explain? The only downside I know of is only 2 years of Android updates. I remember Sony phones having close to stock android which was considered a good thing.
Sony oleds use panels from lg and samsung, they are not some special panels made to order but the same panels that lg and samsing are using themselves. There really is no point in buying a sony (oled) tv.
The software is too barebone to the point there's no calculator app preinstalled
No gallery (because google photos, a'd besides sony officially having one discontinued)
No weather app (despite having one discontinued)
But don't worry it comes with TikTok, Netflix, and Call of Duty preinstalled however!
Honestly my 5 iii feels like a downgrade compared to my S10e on almost every aspect beside the battery life, 5g support and it being more comfortable to hold with one hand (as I have tiny hands)

I have one as a backup. I would honestly use it as a main phone but it's an Exynos version and it gets warm from very lite usage

Other than that I don't see the appeal in 2024, movies are fricking godawful, their console is an overglorified gaming PC with 2 or 3 exclusives.
they make the best camera sensors, used in pretty much any non-canon camera or phone.
in consumer products their audio stuff is solid, the playstation is successful, their tvs command a premium over lg ones despite using the same panels because their implementation is good.

Sony is doing very well considering their main rivals are literal state funded megacorps from korea and china who's core policy is "frick japan" and undercut them and steal technology at every turn.
They've basically receded into being a luxary brand in terms of consumer electronics, which isn't a bad position to be in.

That's a complete fantasy. Nobody cares about the Sony name on consumer electronics these days, and nor does it bring with it any guarantee of quality. Most of Sony's products are dog shit and have been for a long time. Their phones are awful and have laughable, chink-tier update support. Their TVs are inferior to LG, Panasonic and even Samshit. Their audio products are mediocrity incarnate. About the only area where Sony produces premium products that beat the competition is camera sensors and lenses.

Over the years I have updated several of my phones and more often than not I found previous features missing, new bloat, and 0 actual improvements
They still make great headphones and cameras, it's amazing how well they are doing to be honest. Their smartphones are good too but a niche product, expensive for what they are but full featured, you still get an SD card slot and headphone jack plus the form factor is nicer

its kinda weird , they still remain at the forefront of R&D in many ways , and companies like fujistu and hitachi ect still remain and continue development, but there is now a disconnect between those companies and the consumer market, probably due to foreign competition , subsidized by labour in third world countries.
Most Japanese electronics companies focus almost exclusively on the domestic Japanese market (Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu...). Sony is more international and diversified (beyond electronics it owns like half the music market for example) but it has also lost presence in the world. All these companies are still strong inside Japan. 95% of electronics sold in Japan are Japanese.
Their cameras are top tier - if you're someone who has been using a Sony camera for a while, you really cannot appreciate how space-age their autofocus technology is until you pick up a camera from some other maker, it's SO fast. If you want to shoot video, Sony is a no-brainer.
Their wireless headphones are also very good, not as good as their cameras, but very good all-rounders: good sound, great Bluetooth range, great battery life, good microphones for phone calls, very good noise cancelling, poor charging speed.
Not sure about their TVs, I only ever saw them in stores, never in actual people's homes, lol.
Their phones have great build quality, they're legit tough.The basic or auto camera mode on Xperia phones is terrible but if you know how to work the manual mode, you can easily take photos that are up there with Google Pixel or iPhone. But their phones are so expensive, I have no idea how the mobile division of Sony has not been sacked yet
