If you’re young, you can still learn how to buckle down and see things through. You don’t want to be learning that for the first time at thirty-five.

Outline a story. Come up with something in your head, highlights of the moments you want to tell. Write them down, and then think about why your character might be involved. How they get from one moment to the next, and then just write what's in between. I notice people who say they could never write a story always just attempt to stare at a blank page and think that the story will just come to that like an idea fairy just smacking you in the face. That's not how most authors work.

Another anon interjecting --Also try to flesh out characters before hand and how they interact with others that will give rise to different scenarios and a story might come out of that. Try to write a story with a resentful, yet impotent character from Notes From The Underground for example or The Double or Envy (this one by Yuri Olesha) Or try to write something which will befit the character of Levin (Tolstoy's self insert in Anna Karenina). This is a fun exercise which might work for you.

No famous writer with a prolific output put out their magnum opus on the first stab.

The most important part is to get started. Keep writing those mediocre short stories. They may just be mediocre, they may not. The important part is polishing your craft.

Keep struggling. The only person you have to beat is yourself. If you, in your heart of hearts, believe you can write the next Great American Novel, you're going to have to achieve it through fighting in the mud.

Start criticizing other works, such as this person's books that gained popularity through luck. I am a much better writer.

You read Cyril Connolly's Enemies Of Promise and write yourself a similar memoir about how like Cyril you could never write.

That painting is really cool to see in person. It's at the Musee Fabre in Montpellier, France. I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area. Great art museum, but I don't think it's nearly famous enough given it's a bit out of the way from Paris or Marseille.

why would anyone ever go to montpellier tho

To see Musee Fabre. At least that's why I did, and it was literally the only thing I did while I was there. Also there's a large theater or opera house or something but I didn't see anything interesting playing, and I was in a hurry to catch a train to Perpignan anyway, so I didn't stick around.

Still, the Musee is really great. Very large, like 4 big floors, tons of fine art even though like a quarter of the gallery space is devoted to garbage contemporary "art". I had a great time even though I nearly had a panic attack when one of my camera batteries died faster than expected and I was afraid I wouldn't have any way to recharge. Thankfully I made it in the end but it was closer than I'd like.

    >I'll never became a legendary writer
    Already over.
But not all is lost. If perhaps you lose your delusions start writing and reading more consistently, get a routine going (or make a plan/outline at least), start enjoying yourself while doing so. You might perhaps just finish a novel one day

Why even worry about a novel... try your hand at a short story first.

There's other mediums as well, such as graphic novels. You'd need to pay an artist of course.

In any case, in this day and age, you can have a great story, but unless you already have a following expect it to go on the pile. Write and create because it means something, not to try and become famous because that won't happen. But if you really want to try, get that youtube channel going cause that's where your customers are going to be coming from.

Your problem is that you care more about the image of success than the craft. You don't enjoy writing in and of itself, but you want to be a Writer™. You need to understand that a "writer" is just a person who writes. You shouldn't compare yourself to other writers, because your personal journey is--naturally--personal to (You), but do you suppose that the authors you most admire were trying to become famous? The greatest works of literature weren't made by shallow zoomers looking for clout, they were made by people who are passionate about writing.

I'm not trying to discourage you, unless of course you genuinely don't find writing rewarding for you, in which caseyou need to find a creative outlet that is. But if there's a part of you that does find writing enjoyable or rewarding, then just keep doing it. The metric of success should just be that you write a lot and that you see incremental improvements.

10,000 hours. That's how long it takes to master a skill. If you practice ANYTHING for 10,000 hours, you'll become a master at it. The same goes for writing. I started writing for an hour a day, every single day when I was 14. My first two books were terrible. But it was important that I wrote two bad books because now I'm 24 with ten years of writing experience. If you want to be a "writer," forget about it. But if you want to write, just do it regularly and put aside these notions of being "legendary." Stop letting your ego wienerblock you and don't be afraid to write a few bad stories.
