    arm

    Building PCs Is dead
    You WILL use ARM.
You WILL not be able to replace parts
You WILL throw away PCs that are perfectly functonal.
    You WILL be happy.

      Anonymous

why do you think arm based PCs cannot be modified/used like traditional x86/x64 PCs? (building, changing parts, etc)

        Anonymous

Everytime there is a paradigm shift there is a worry that you won't be able to enjoy some aspect that existed before the shift.
This is exacerbated when you have a company (Apple) that gives a glimpse into the new paradigm and it's a completely locked down platform that you can't customize and that you can't service easily.

The same thing is happening with electric vehicles, everyone looks at Tesla as the future of cars and if you know anything about Tesla the future ends up looking nightmarish.

Of course, both companies are not all the market, they are just the ones that have a monopoly on certain things and thus have the power to force unpopular changes so the concern may be overblown.

I have a base model Mac studio for work. It's alright but it's not replacing my windows desktop. I only have it so I can make sure my programs work on Mac hardware

I mean the formfactor is nice, if APUs get good enough i'll happily replace my main desktop with something with a similarl size. So long as you can drop in a new board/APU when you want.

        Anonymous

If AMD or Intel used a similar form factor but made the RAM and SSD replaceable, I'd be fine with it. I have no need for a unicorn vomit tower.

They already do. Asus PN50/51 series and MSI/Gigabyte equivalents, Asrock Deskmini series especially. Socketed CPU and accessible RAM and storage. Then there's a ton of mini pcs with fixed CPUs but replaceable memory.
Ryzen 5700G is the best you can get, don't care about Intel counterpart. I'm definitely putting one together with a Zen 4 APU if iGP performance is close to my comfy RX470.

nobody cares about power consumption. If this happens, it will only be because companies want to sell a locked down box you cannot touch.

Many consumers care about power consumption. Power consumption also goes hand in hand with thermals which consumers also care about.

    shit tier performance
it's not a RISC vs CISC problem, ARM is just dog shit, the only good thing it has going for itself is 128bit floats but even that gets blasted off to the sky team rocket style by IBM and the fact nobody cares about non-32bit float 99% of the time.
just try to program an optimized asm routine in ARM, you can't even find an instruction list/reference like you can for x86 and literally every other CPU.
MIPS, SH2, PowerPC, you fricking name it, it's billion times better and less bloated than the unpolished turd that is modern ARM. ironic because ARM is supposed to be minimalist.

This is good because it will denormify computing. When x64 goes then that will help too. All the computer nerds can go back to having small communities for x86/x64 games/software while normalgays use their glorified chromebooks.

    >all apple products preloaded with iOS and macOS
    >blocks any lincuck distro from even booting with T2
    >shifts entire industry to ARM
    >ARM allows all PC OEMs to have a unique proprietary locked bootloader for each product they release
    >soon ARM stinkpads will come locked to winblows
    >every single ARM laptop will be a unique special snowflake like phones and need a custom bootloader exploit and distro built for it
    >736 arm laptops released each year mean 736 device specific root exploits, 736 special snowflake builds of the loonix kernel, and 736 custom builds of ubuntu
    >multiplied by 521 different distros that's like over a million different distros have to be specifically built to be arm compatible EVERY UPDATE
    >freetards will be lucky to crack 10-20 device bootloaders a year
    >hobby loonix distros wiped out instantly because neckbeard neets cant just release 1 ISO for 23,768 laptops anymore
    >desktops and custom built devices completely extinct without economy of scale manufacturing when corporate purchases shift entirely to ARM
    >only major distros will survive on 2-3 stinkpad models that get cracked each year
    >loonix market share tanks from 1% to 0.00001% like it is on android vs lineage
    >loonix purged from all of technology within this decade
    >Stallman and FSF cancelled
    >freetards all neck themselves
