I never really understood the point of shitting on what the general population read. It's like anything, movies, music, etc. Anything that allows some kind of escapism or spoon-fed content will get popular. And I genuinely don't believe it's because they're stupid or dumb, but that throughout their lives they never tried more challenging pieces of art work, or had just never had a good intro into it. A good example is my buddy's brother. Dumb as frick is apart of Generation Z who literally only watches Marvel and plays video games. We showed him Persona by Ingmar Bergman and it blew him away and led him down a rabbit hole of checking out different directors on my Criterion Channel account. Obviously there are dumb as frick people, but I think given a chance and a decent intro, they could also enjoy more challenging work.
Also, and I say this without hesitation, but there is an oversaturation of absolute dog-fricking-shit nonfiction books that get shoved down people's throats these days.
This dude gets it. Disdain for plebian readers is partly what prevents people from graduating to more intricate things.
It’s very funny to me that a normal person might read it and later realise the author is a Twitter lunatic posting about global Black person communism and hentai. Wild how even a Phd from Yale isn’t enough to insulate you from becoming terminally online.
Academia is terminally online in general now, although it should go without saying that Yale is a shit hole along with the rest of the Ivy League.
Nock's 'memoirs of a superfluous man' more or less reveals that your sentiments towards pop drivel is nothing new. He was right to identify the death knell of any serious literary movement in America post-1890; the proliferation of the telegraph ensured that written communication would become more scattered and less contextual. Prior to the telegraph, written works were longer and well-structured, or at the very least relevant; post telegraph, they were a scattered mess that told you an abundance of nothing. This shift in view towards writing convinced hoardes of bad authors to pick up the pen, thus unleashing a fusillade of trite on the unsuspecting public. The feedback loop has been immensely destructive, with television and film providing unneeded resonance.
You should have written "a part", not "apart". Also I disagree. Shitting on the general populace's taste is important, they need to know that what they enjoy is drivel. It's the only way to counter the increasing pile of shit that stinks up every bookstore I enter, including now second-hand book stores that I once respected.

The picture is probably fake. But he is number one currently in the category of Best Sellers in Ancient Greek History (on Amazon). I hope you enjoys that ranking while it lasts. lol
