I cannot imagine a worse use of time than reading the Bible cover to cover without enjoying it or getting much from it so you can check your box.

Please stop. Read the books one at a time and research and study them. Read entire books about literature, history, archeology and theology alongside them. These are incredibly difficult and subtle ancient texts with 1000 meanings advanced since they were written.

Moving your eyes over the words does not do anyone or anything any good. You need to understand, study and comprehend. Slow down.

You are on a fool's errand.

Funny. I read the Bible front to back the first time I read it, and I enjoyed it. Helped me to see the connections to Jesus a whole lot better than I would have otherwise, too, I bet.

I'm getting a lot out of it. A newfound interest in ancient history and geography, evolution of theology and myths; I find a lot of passages beautifully written so much so that they will leave a lasting effect. It's just that it's really dense and I'm asking if I should take a break to soak it in a bit more.

You are about to get to Samuel 1 and 2 which is a literary masterpiece. Take a brief break but definitely keep going.

absolute bullshit, you have never read iliad or odyssey if you think that.

I will never read Edith Hamilton.
I will never take anything written on Wikipedia seriously.
If you need context for the Iliad and for the Odyssey then you are stupid.

Sorry but history is for nerd-gays. Myth is best read completely de-contextualized so that it may truly remain pure myth.
You think the big man Jesus Christ spent all his time poring over tomes about the recent history of ancient judea.
No, that divine gentleniggGod made that shit up 100% completely from the spirit alone.
And so should be similarly enjoyed.

Deuteronomy through 2 Kings is a wonderful narrative, you need to at least read that far before taking a long break. Pacing yourself a bit is fine though to handle its density.

i wanted to read the bible cover to cover at first but by the time i had finished exodus i was really tired of it and read some of the gospels instead as that was more fun and better to my growth as a christian.
if its your first time reading the bible i dont recommend reading it cover to cover but if you already read some or all of the books and want to do it then do it but yea i cant imagine it as fun.

I have not seen it either but it looks very professionally made. They sit around this big table that looks like something of out The Lord of the Rings and discuss scripture. There's a lot of top class israeli scholars on the panel too like that guy Denis Prager. The commentary seems quite engaging. I'm saving to watch it after I finish Peterson's Genesis series (came out in 2017).

Judges is probably the coolest most action-y part of the entire Bible; how is THAT the one that finally burnt you out?

Anyway if you get "the story" of the Bible and nothing else the order would be
    >Genesis
    >Enoch (will not be in your bible)
    >Exodus
    >Joshua
    >Judges
    >1/2 Samuel
    >1/2 Kings
    >Isaiah
    >Jeremiah
    >1/2 Maccabbees (may not be in your bible)
    >Luke
    >Acts
    >Revelation

I read the Bible and God tried to get my attention. I read John and then solicitors came the next morning as soon as I woke up and stepped out of my room. I have been here for years, these are the only religious solicitors I’ve had. Not interested in church though. You should maybe try prayer instead of bruteforcing the Bible.

Just the outset. Then it's just another perspective of the events in Kings.

Plus, depending on what Bible you have, you're then close to some really good stuff. Jon, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, etc. Then you get Isiah.

Don't get too hung up on the order. Different Christian sects order the books differently and the israelites have a different ordering from the Christians. Like, if you want to do all the history-(like) stuff at once you should really do Daniel after Ezra and Nehemiah. Then Maccabees, with Judith and Tobit put in further back I believe.

Or, if Job is taken as a historical story, it would go after Genesis, but I think it doesn't tie into the history the way Ruth does.

I might be wrong but I believe Judith was from around the time of Jonah. I know it's hard to date because the names of leaders seem to have been mistranscribed.

Esther would be around the Babylonian Captivity with Daniel, whereas the end of the histories with Ezra is actually after this. Maccabees is much later, after Alexander the Great.

Oh and the wisdom literature seemingly comes from diverse periods despite all being attributed to Solomon. Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are earlier, the Wisdom of Solomon and Sirach are later. Fourth Maccabees, is another later wisdom text, while the earlier ones are histories.

Job appears to be fairly old in its current form because it starts to show up in the major prophets. I think Ezekiel quotes it.
