I've only read two Pynchon novels so far but he seems very obsessed with musical numbers and sexual innuendo. Anyone know why?

the man likes a gag and a goof what else can I say? I could say that writing song lyrics in a book is moronic but I wont say that.

The lyrics are exercises in poetic forms and parody.

    >innuendo
A whole lot more than innuendo... what do you mean? It's pornographic.

You're correct there, the more I read of the one I'm currently on the more sexual it gets. Didn't this guy have a wife to frick instead of writing this?

Yeah, I'm only halfway through and there've already been UFOs, ninjas, Godzilla and ghosts...it's a lot.
I read Lot 49 and that was fine, there was only one main schizoid line there.
I'm reading his easier stuff to prep for GR

The only conspiratorial/fantastical element was the Tristero. Oedipa wasn't randomly running into vampires and Bigfoot, stuff like that.

That bit with the old sailor was pretty fantastical, also she hallucinates early on

She hallucinates a picture of Uncle Sam moving and looking at her at the beginning of the story

That bit with the old sailor was pretty fantastical, also she hallucinates early on

That's true, but these moments are so small and ambiguous compared to Vineland where they live in a town of ghosts for a while and there's a straight up UFO abduction. I also forgot to mention the whole Tube thing going on with tv in Vineland...I suppose I'll find out if that goes anywhere soon enough

            oh right that
i interpreted it as her picturing it not hallucinating it

I think she was an honest to goodness schizophrenic, what with the LSD testing, the shrink, her night in the city where she was basically tripping, and the ending where one of the options was that she hallucinated the entire thing. I think it makes it more compelling.

I saw Thomas Pynchon at a grocery store in Manhattan yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I went off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen bananas in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bananas and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any kirsch zomoskepsis,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each banana and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Biggest bait I've ever bit. Crying of the lot is nonsensical and M&D is booooooring (there are like 4 cool chapters in it). One day I'll read gravity's rainbow to check if he's a hack or not.
