AFAIK inheritance isn't taken as distributable in a divorce. At least not in my non-pozzed country.
If it's put into a shared account, or any piece of it is used/spent towards the marriage it becomes a marital asset. Prenups help define what is and isn't a marital asset, and can protect the couple in two ways. It protects the person with the inheritance, in that is keeps the partner from having a large monetary incentive to divorce, and it also protects the couple in that it keeps greedy family members from whispering into the spouses ear about divorcing for money. Weeds them right the frick out matter of fact. You can come back and tell prying family that your spouses inheritance is protected and they shut right up.
It's never too late, and even if it gets thrown out it's still worth some amount of leverage in the negotiations.
