If I were you, I would avoid dual-booting kali. T490 is powerfull enough to get it to work in a VM (give it at least 2 virtual cores,4 GB of ram and 50 gb of storage). Also, before you start using kali, you should actually learn cybersecurity first. check out /sec/ thread for literature and some decent channels like LiveOverflow or Guided Hacking.

I can't help you with dual booting, but as an alternative you can run Kali Linux on a virtual machine, or from a live usb.

No problem. Do you have an old computer around the house that you can use, or is the Thinkpad your only computer?
If you do, you can install Proxmox on the old computer, and then install multiple virtual machines in there. So one virtual machine can run Kali linux, others can run older versions of windows that you can practice pentesting.
And you can control all of this from your thinkpad.
just run kali (you should use parrotos imo) in a windows virtual machine, there's no point in actually running kali or any other distro like that as a main.
