I hate to break it to you but people who are actually employed prefer to have a portable workstation that doesn't suck to use.
I can't haul my desktop to every place I need to use a computer, so I have a high quality laptop to use in those situations.

I'm sysadmin so I don't give two fricks what I work with as long as I have internet connection but depending on company I worked in devs were either connectiong to vm farms or were using big boy hardware from home. You won't be running databases from under your desk.

The only time where laptops actually make sense is if you're Stallman-tier autistic and you're willing and able to get work done even out in the open where you can't have a desktop available. In that case, sure, a laptop is the best option you have.

Any serious compute workload is done on a server so it doesn’t matter. If anything desktops are toys since their main advantage is gaming and you can’t travel with them, which sort of nullifies the productivity advantage of a big screen.
