I can't tell from your post if you actually said "though I know I got fired" when talking to them.
Did you say that? Or was that a thought?
Either way it is incredibly based, I love it.

Good (or even average) employees are so rare these days it's hard to justify letting one go even if they miss work a lot. I worked as a hiring manager up until the end of last year. It was a nightmare trying to keep the place staffed. There was lots of people calling out all the time and fricking up to the point they should have been fired or at least disciplined, but the only person who ever got fired was a guy who stole money.

            Anonymous

You should just quit man. It's not worth sticking around workplaces that are circling the drain so bad they can't keep full staffing or maintain worker discipline. They just dump all the problems on HR and expect us soul-less vampires to fix everything... It's just not worth it. Hell fricking Chainlink labs has a bunch of HR people and they don't even do anything. Try applying there.

I did quit. The last straw was watching my boss start paying people out of his own pocket to cover shifts of people who kept calling out. I realized how broken and pathetic the whole thing is.

Former HRgay here, nope. They'd have to give you a written warning and if you say it was for a medical reason (ie I was sick) they have to REALLY work hard to fire you. Even in the states.

If you have nothing in writing, you're in the clear. If they ask why you were absent, just say it was for medical reasons. If they need a doctor's note, say you didn't go and they never said you needed one.

If it's a mental illness thing try looking for a therapist that offers first session free (your insurance may just cover like 10 sessions a year or something) and tell them you're dealing with whatever you're dealing with and you need a note for why you weren't able to work. That's only IF they say you need a doctor's note. Otherwise just don't do it.

"Allowed absences" - is this for PTO or just in general? Either way they have to give you a warning first.

jobs straight up need to start accommodating for these mental breakdowns. more people are experiencing them than you realize.

Yeah when I was in the military I wound up going to rehab to get some time off. Incidentally it got me sober but the main reason was to get away from my shitty bosses for 30 days. That lasted me two years until at the height of covid and vax mandate bullshit (illegal orders), they saddled me with a project that was doomed to fail so I made a point of spreading the blame around as much as possible and had a minor breakdown. Eventually I was able to quit with full honorable but all the burnout has kept me from working since then (thank god for crypto).

they are. its fricking ridiculous. I work with a guy that has taken more days off for his mental health than he has showed up this last year. he is completely useless and even when he is 'working' he gets nothing done. they still haven't fired his ass. I don't understand it tbh.

Firing people is incredibly hard, especially when they have a medical excuse. Imagine doing your normal 40 hours a week, but shorthanded by one guy, and getting rid of him takes another 40 hours a week on top of that. And then after all that work, it's determined that nope he was in the right, you were wrong, and you owe him all these apologies and shit. It nearly broke one supervisor I was helping because the previous two supervisors fricked her and the guy over.

AFAIK that tard is still there wasting time and money and doing little productive work.

There’s an interview with Larry David where something similar happened. They weren’t picking his skits so he told them he quit and walked out. Realized he made a mistake that night and showed back up to work (SNL) and no one said anything.

Kek. Didn't know about that. On a much smaller scale, one of my coworkers (small company) actually walked off the job and called the office to say she quit, and the hr girl actually told her she's not going to let her quit so she's not classifying it as one, and to go home and relax.
She showed up the next day and nobody said anything. I guess everyone gets one. I'm sitting on mine.

I took 3 days off over two months, non-consecutive, when I was too tired to work because I'm graveyard, didn't sleep for 3 days straight, and was experiencing hallucinations not safe to drive. Fired despite giving them warning. I haven't worked since. Normies are Black folk.

File a complaint with your state labor board. At the very least your company will get investigated which will inconvenience them greatly, and you might get damages awarded by the state without even a lawsuit.

Best advice is get off that shit and never touch it again, but you may have realized that by now
Unironically, doctors just push shitty pills. Don't trust them. Exercise, get good sleep, eat good food and find things to laugh about. If you're into social drug use I would recommend small doses of psilocybin. Best of luck

Just in general I’ve noticed employers being more lenient about attendance or sick time or mental health days with employees who aren’t remote. They actually seem worried about losing people. There seems to be an unspoken understanding that everybody is holding down two jobs. Maybe that’s flipped the script a little. I’m really not sure. Remote workers, however, are fired without a second thought.
