Lightning is the peak port for mobile devices. It is perfect in every aspect. It is way better than USB-C.

It has nothing to to with the connector itself, Lightning can be updated to support USB3 or even Thunderbolt. Apple just gave up of improving lightning and probably they'll get rid of it in the near future.

Because Apple don't give a frick about it. We're talking about the connector itself, adding two or four more optional pins to connector is not a huge deal and USB-A 3.0 did the exact same thing.

Lightning was ahead of its time, at the time when it was released, all Android smartphones were using crappy micro USB connections.
Nowadays, Apple is slowly killing the Lightning port. Almost all iPads are using USB-C and Apple is not improving Lightning anymore. They're probably ditch the ports from the next iPhone completely.
Also, USB 2.0 speeds benefits Apple. You're forced to use AirDrop if you're willing to get faster file transfer speeds, and AirDrop is exclusive to Apple products. Thus, Apple is forcing you to get a Mac.
Seems like Apple would gain goodwill to open source the lighting port and make ot standard.
