Islam places heavy emphasis on the family unit, and it's proper functioning, over all others. When the Taliban said that money should be used to feed starving kids during the sanctions the NGO refused to even entertain a tiny bit to be cut out for food aid and demanded access to the statues...so the Taliban blew them up out of spite.
You've got to ask yourself why these guys didn't destroy the statues initially when they took power or why Muslims didn't destroy them in all the years they ruled these parts of the world. Occasionally you get deranged ideologues in groups like ISIS who think they're doing a holy duty by smashing statues but the most of the time Islamic groups like the Taliban are moderate. Sure they're a bit backward when it comes to stuff like refusing girls access to school but that's just the general misogynistic tendency of that part of the world and isn't actually based in Islam at all.
