Sure it's a distraction from the humdrum of daily life but there are some valuable and practical nuggets of wisdom if you dig deep enough for 'em
Literature is great because you get to indulge in your hobby and convince yourself it's not as big a waste of time as indulging in any of your other hobbies and people around you tend to actually think the same and some even admire you for it.

I read to fix the world's problems. I wish I could escape sometimes but I can't seem to ever manage to do it.
Two major benefits of reading that are not escapism:
1. Staying informed of history, ideas, etc.
