WinXP is a great OS for the VM. It's relatively lightweight, quick to install, boot and run. Runs with less memory than the shitty newer Windows. And it's well cracked. I run WinXP in a VM for legacy games myself.

There are actual literal shills here promoting products so naturally they have to try and gaslight people into thinking they need the latest bullshit for their home use, which will not see 99% of attack vectors anyways. There's gays shilling for muh windows security updates who completely neglect their routers which is way more relevant for a home network than a local computer on the network

well tbh it does exist. there's nothing wrong with it either though. I'm baby ducked into some specific software setup and I like it that way, I'm not going to pretend it's rational (sometimes it's just little quirks, for example I never used Reddit without Rif. the moment I uninstalled it like 7 years ago I never used Reddit again). but it will still mean that I just won't use software that doesn't fit my baby duck preference.

I know, I know the new update has modern UI and uses best practices in UX research or whatever... but basically I'm just not gonna get the update. I know.. UGH I know.. IM SORRY! It's just that I'm not getting it is all. Hahahaha.

Baby ducks form an attachment bond with whatever animal it first sees after hatching. Hopefully that's its mother but if it's a human, it will see the human as its mother. Or maybe it's a racoon, in which case the duckling's very short life will be of it trying to nestle up against its masked "mother" right before it tears the duckling's head off and eats it.

It is an undeniable fact of life that every single time a windows version comes out, some people will stick to the previous one, no matter how bad it is, because having to right click here instead of there is such a gargantuan effort for these wienermunchers, you don't even know.

10 users migrating from 7 who are now acting like 10 was never bad deserve Windows 11 to be forced upon them without a chance to ever switch back.

windows XP actually does support PAE, the 4GB limit is purely a licensing limitation. in fact from sp2 pae is enabled by default so it can use DEP, but it still soft-limits you to 4GB
most windows editions have licensing-based ram and cpu count limits
i'd be surprised if there wasn't some hack available to remove said limit

          [...]
that said i do realise there's still a 4GB limit per process because it's still a 32bit architecture, and you can't even use all of that since some of the address space is reserved by the os (iirc by default a process can only use 2GB, but there's a kernel switch to bump that up to 3GB)

XP 32-Bit only supports 3GB but you can still load your OS with as many gigabytes your motherboard can handle. It will only use 3GB.

          Works on my machine.

I've used to use PAE and had more memory. Stop lying. The only limitation is the 32bit application can't address more than 3.5GB or something around this. But if all your application use less than that it's not a problem.

The guy's got a point, but he's too stupid to properly express it. Games with retro graphics shouldn't require a 1050 ti and a Ryzen 5 to run properly when a game that looks and plays the exact same ran on hardware not even 1% as powerful 20 years ago. The only reason this happens is laziness on the part of the devs who want to use some premade engine which includes a million features they aren't even using.

This same principle applies to software in general as well. If you can make your program capable of running on weaker hardware you should. Too many devs "being forced to drop support" for older OSes because they relied on electron for everything.

Until we know what game this is about there's no way to judge.
People also have no fricking idea how bad games used to look and what limitations there were during the 2000s.
Especially on the backend where it's not about graphics.

        >People also have no fricking idea how bad games used to look and what limitations there were during the 2000s. Especially on the backend where it's not about graphics.
Doesn't change the fact that if they're not doing anything different on the front end, there's no reason to change the backend. I'm still mad that ren'py (a visual novel engine) can't run on half of my systems while half-life 2 can.

I'm sure there are such cases.
There certainly are the opposite of those too.
Case in point Rainworld and vampire Survivors.
The former one simulates an ecosystem on the entire map while you're only interacting with a single screen and the latter spawns so many mobs that modern cpus crap out.

            Anonymous

Those examples are not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about stuff like ren'py, which has existed for 20 years and isdoing the same thing it did 20 years ago, only with 20x the system requirements and all those retro shooters that have been coming out recently where they're just doom/quake clones.

            Anonymous

            >ren'py
It's free software, so you can compile it yourself to run on XP if you like to.
Quite possibly you'll run into a few roadblocks and that's the thing, if none of the devs have a machine with the OS why should they have to overcome those instead of you?

            Anonymous

            >doom/quake clones
And that was JOHN FRICKING CARMACK.
Indies cobbling something together with Unity or Godot won't be able to optimize their slop to run on old OSes.
Also what's the problem, there's more maps for doom and quake maps out there for a lifetime, just play that instead of some clone.
