Apple was destroyed in the computer market for offices and home computing in the 90s, so they cleverly went for the rich kid demographic to peddle their laptops. This niche market was too small for windows laptop makers to seriously compete over, and could be squeezed for more revenue. These ads let them into that market, and also earned them the rep of being the cool computer company. Apple consoomers felt they stood out from the commoner pleb windows users. Without this huge marketing boost, the iphone probably would have flopped.
