That’s because they’re using 256gb NAND chips so the base model can’t read/write in parallel
Apparently the M2 mbp is the same with the new SSD but people say there is no difference between M2 and m1 mbp after they have tested it
It's pretty clear they're using the same NAND as last generation, but they're using a 1x256gb module instead of 2x128gb modules on the lowest end model. So don't be a moron and buy the 512gb m2 MacBook Air. End of story, that's too little storage for that tier of laptop anyways.

There is no reason to go for m1 pro if you don't need the features.
The 8 core m1 pro is probably not going to be faster than the 8 core m2 in most applications since everything is single threaded webshit now. The big reasons to get the 14" are the extra I/O and in particular dual external monitor support without the use of displaylink, HDR screen, and bigger screen and people can just not need any of those things.
MBA m2 is 2.7lbs and more importantly it has a pretty small footprint for the screen size. It's a bit better for carrying around and using in odd spaces. If you take it on vacation, it's good enough to edit vacation footage. It's better for a certain kind of user, like one who already has a desktop, or one who just needs a high degree of mobility, or one who is just looking to save a few bucks by not going for "nice to have" features like HDR. Also the refresh rate is a meme because the 120hz monitor response times are abysmally shit.

You wasted $200 on a 10 core GPU. The m2 pro throttles to shit with an 8 core GPU, an m2 air is going to burst into fricking flames.
The laptop body does not have the cooling to support that chip. If you think "but anon - Apple would never sell a computer with insufficient cooling" give yourself a hard slap.

Straight up, if you want the 10 core GPU, and I do know people who play games through Rosetta who need every fricking bit of extra CPU performance they can get so the m2 is highly desirable, you REALLY need to go with the m2 pro not the m2 air.
You can't use the 10 cores at full throttle on an m2 air you just can't. Won't happen. This is one of the only niches for the m2 pro. I would suggest going 8 core GPU MBA all the way. 10 core MBA is like having a huge limp dick.

M2 Pro can overheat even with a fan, you might want to wait for reviews to see if the M2 Air will do the same. That plus waiting to see if it has the speeds of the M1 Air or if it's half speed for the base model like the M2 Pro.

i bought the m2 air and immediatley refunded it when I realized the macbook pro with m1pro chip is superior in every single way. Particularly 120hz on the m1pro vs 60hz max on the m2 chip. The m1 pro is also significantly more powerful.
