More /csg/ related, but those lamps are fricking great. They sell for 6$ at ali and come with a battery and charge controller. You can rip the other stuff out and put some WS2812b and some sort of ESP in there to make a battery powered smart lamp that looks kinda classy for less than 10 bucks. I've put a couple of them at my work place to indicate work related metrics via colors. They also have a wire connected to the chassis that you can use as capacitive touch. Can highly recommend.

But there's basically a a whole bunch of variations on them. They're all made of anodized iron, so you need to get one where the frosted plastic part for light diffusion is large enough to accommodate your choice of ESP.

As someone who works developing internal cybersecurity tools for a company, I can affirmatively tell yall that most analysts are idiots, who will regularly screw up reporting procedures and piss off customers if given room to. We straight up have to build guardrails and safety checks into the software to double-verify that they're doing their jobs correctly to avoid this.

Total compensation roughly $130k equivalent. Admittedly not much but it's pretty ok for Europe, the government only steals about a third and in return I get pretty good job security. Live in rural Scotland. Own two properties (home + holiday property in Central Europe, the latter bought with cash outright). Rental from the holiday property pays my mortgage, I make additional payments every month to screw over the usurious hand-rubber. My family live a reasonable quality of life and I can even put away some savings. I don't know what those prostitutes are doing to spend that much money on nothing.

      >How in the world are these huge tech companies not doing any performance metrics on their own staff?
There are no engineer performance metrics, only effort metrics. You can measure code committed but that doesn't tell you if the work was actually good or if they did something the dumb way that shows evidence of "performance" instead of the safe and efficient way that may require a lot of time spent reading and very little coding.

      >Meanwhile if you've interacted with google they already have mathematically modeled your next three most likely purchases.

Customers aren't intentionally clicking ads or buying things to make themselves look like good customers so that the company won't fire them.

You can assess how valuable someone is by how much they write a lot of the time and I don't mean emails and Slack messages. People adding value are actually writing a lot, that could be code, policy documents, marketing materials, even user documentation. You'll notice that programme managers, project managers, product managers often output absolutely nothing at all and when they do it's often copy-pasted from other people.

This. People that claim that work can't be measured are slacking off.

      Anonymous

This is very very true and something that idiots on this board LARPing as "serious professionals" either don't understand or deliberately lie about.

This applies ESPECIALLY to programming. No, the notion that "good/experienced programmers don't write much code, if at all" is not true, you fell for grifter memes. A good devleoper (or at least one that isn't an office parasite) will ALWAYS have something to show over time, be it code, documents, etc.

Sure, productivity is not a constant. On some days, you will get more or less work done compared to the rest, we are all human after all. But in the long run, a competent worker will always produce plenty of observable, concrete output. If someone asks you "what do you do exactly in the company?", conceivably you should be able to just point at something and answer "this".

Most of this applies not just to programmers, but to the majority of jobs.

all tech companies overhired women during pandemic. now they're laying off all of those women + low performers in extra roles that aren't essential, after that they're shifting some roles into overseas in EU/SA/SEA (except India) so they can save costs for investors. just the typical industry & market correction, except this time it's worse because the value of CS degrees from the last 4 years are also inflated due to the pandemic shit where they forced every moron to do online assessments. So now you have the perfect shitstorm of morons w/ barely any experience, laid off women that have some experience but is functionally moronic at their jobs, and experienced ppl that are functional but refuse to work for peanuts or take anything lower than their previous salary. it's going to be another 3-4 years of bloodbath as businesses get killed off. just hunker down, file for neetbucks, and do some gigs.

Where are all the layoffs? Job market is still doing great with very low unemployment rates.

The Fed is at a crossroads at the moment.
They are scared to keep interest rates high for long because it may crash the market with no survivors. Powell testified to Congress that at least one big bank will go under.

On December they started backing down from the inflation-fighting narrative and gotten scared enough that they started talking about how inflation was already under control and it was time to stop tightening, they talked about lowering rates this 2024, at least with three rate cuts this year. This massive hype for a Fed pivot created a massive stock market bubble/boom in a matter of months, with the SPX reaching all time highs.

However since inflation is rearing its head again, the Fed is pivoting again, with most board members going back to the inflation-fighting narrative and talking about a single rate cut this year, as opposed to three. This has cooled the stock market and is bringing renewed fears of layoffs.

It's not Powell's fault tbh, it wasn't his idea to shut down the world economy over a stronger flu, he did the best he could given the circumstances, it's the Treasury that keeps spending like there's no tomorrow and that makes it harder for inflation to reach the 2% target.

He did frick up on December though, sent the wrong signals to the market.

Most firemen, security/guards, and policeman sit around and do nothing most of the day, but since you can't teleport them out of bed when you need them, you have to pay for their long ass shifts. This is a concept white collar managers can't seem to grasp. They want to treat their workers like manual laborers in a factory where they constantly do "actual work", but guess what when you fire that sysadmin that fricks around all day doing nothing, you will lose millions when there's an emergency.
I would even go further and include all those tech roasties that work in HR and marketing. Sure they spend most of their day in fake meetings when they aren't busy giving a blowjob, but guess who will be overworked when there is a spike in hiring or a spike in demand for a product?

      Google is massively profitable.

It's mostly to trick young men (and the occasional woman, but those are a lot less common) into thinking that the job will be laid back and they might get to actually work with cute young women instead of ending up in an engineering floor where they work with other autists as well as pajeets. The reason they say that it's their workday is because it technically is - but that's just because that was the filming setup.

Are meeting based jobs really that useless? Then why most of this current economy made so much of them like inertia? Why companies invest so much in corporate eye candy and nice meeting areas?

        Anonymous

Because investment is a game where you try to fool people. Keeping up appearances matters more than anything else. Lying to investors is the norm, not the exception. The better you are at lying, the more money you get. Corporate eye candy works in service of that. I'm not a higher-up of any kind (obviously lmfao) but I suspect that having everything be falsely upbeat and happy is good for the mentality of higher-ups which helps them lie better to everyone about how well they're doing. It's harder to lie when you're sad and angry.

        >make roastbeefs think they're hot shit
I will be honest with you, this is the only thing that makes people seethe at all
Imagine telling everyone you have skills but being employed only because you can smile and talk

Programmers are finally automating themselves into obsolescence.

Robotics is so far behind and even if robotics were solved, it would take decades to get robot manufacturing going and then actually manufacture all the robots.

Plumbers and Janitors are the upper class in 2050.

    >but none of them show that they actually do work
because these videos are designed to show off lifestyle, not the wageslavery

also you would immediately get fired for uploading videos of work material, everything on the screen is confidential

    >He isn't stating a fact, from what I can tell. The actual quote in the article is "I don’t think it’s crazy to believe that half the white-collar staff at Google probably does no real work."
    >It's not controversial to think that there is likely waste at Google. This particular article, though, has no insight in it. It's an inflammatory statement with no conversation or intelligence about it. Maybe there's something more in the Substack they reference.
    >Then again, I don't think it's crazy to believe that 50% of Substack newsletter content is full of nonsense /joke

Does have a point though tbh

      >this is bad... because?
Many reasons, including, but not limited to:

      1) It is essentially theft on the worker's part: you are being paid to do useful work in theory, but in practice you are doing nothing valuable.

      2) As pointed out by

      >who cares if all the smart people are entranced by spells and kept in a dungeon so the king cant be overthrown
      go back... please?

high salaries for basically no real work are basically used to lure actual talented people in order to prevent them from doing real work somewhere else, potentially for a competitor.

sure is bad that those workers are stealing money from alphabet and their shareholders. Taking the food straight out of Sundar's mouth
Not to mention how awful it is that they're not creating more horrors beyond our comprehension for competitors, or flooding the blue collar job markets

        >It is essentially theft on the worker's part
the company has the final say on how much they pay the employee and agreed to the number on their contract
every year they keep the employee around is an implicit statement that they see no problem with paying the worker that much

        >in order to prevent them from doing real work somewhere else,
the top talent that wishes to do real work has already left for even higher salaries. the only people who are drawn to high salaries for no work are people who don't want to work anyways

"Not doing any work" is the whole point of it:
