if you come from debian you should consider Rocky, an upstream from RHEL. it is CentOS but not rolling release

Devuan if you want to stay on a Debian base.
Also, Slackware can be extremely minimal and it's one of the most comfy distros I've ever used. Use KISS Linux or Crux if you want to go all out on minimalism.

How can I get slackware extremely minimal?

Uncheck everything you don't want during the installation process. Install nothing but the absolute base system and your prefered Window Manager. This makes things more complicated in the long run, since Slackware has no dependency resolution by default. That's why vanilla Slackware seems so huge. It isn't really, but if you want true minimalism, you have to go that route. But have fun hunting down dependencies if you go minimal.
After Slackware installed correctly switch from Slackwares huge kernel to either a generic, or your own minimal kernel. You probably want to compile your own.
Now you have a minimal Slackware installation and also a system that is extremely annoying to use.
Btw, you can add automatic dependency resolution to Slackware, but that's not very minimal and against the KISS principle.

Imagine using Debian, but without it's huge ass repository and with apt ripped out, you only have dpkg. That's Slackware.

But I guess you could solve some of the dependencies issues w adding Nix package manager to slackware?

You could do this. You could also use slapt-get or Slackbuilds with a helper.

The opus dei was one of the biggest and most powerful cult in spain for a very long time, if you wanted to be rich and powerful you entered there and they gave you work and all that shit.

It's actually bad enough that they taught us in catholic school religion class about "problematic cult fringes". I can't remember any of it though, too busy playing on my phone or something.

Oh well, I like systemd but if you don't then I think both Void and Guix use other, simpler inits.

yea? you like having your dns queries sent to google? you like giving all these botnets your data? why not just go back to windows, they've got ads in the start menu, you'll probably like that too.

It has to be sent somewhere to resolve domain names anyway, it's either gonna be Google or some other company. I use my ISP's DNS for speed but I don't think it matters much.

I like where the you choose to completely ignore the multiple warnings for distro maintainers and the completely transparent nature of using Google for NTP

Adjacent question: which pre-loaded Debian DE is best? I've always used Xfce since it just werks, but I recently tried PopOS and really like the tiling functionality available there. I hate the GNOMEshit and other bloat so I want to go back to base Debian but would like to hold on to some of that functionality. Any suggestions?

If you want tiling just use plain old debian and install a tiling wm like i3, bspwm, awesomewm, etc.

There's a frickton, you can get most to work with xfce too.

If you want a setup that's minimalist but also appropriate for heavy customization, I highly recommend doing a minimal Debian install and then setting up i3. It's a window manager that's fast and doesn't have unnecessary bloat like animations, but it also has quite a lot of features and you can configure it with a simple config file instead of learning Haskell/Lisp or using shell scripts for everything. It also has the advantage that there's a mostly-compatible Wayland clone so you'll be able to switch easily if you ever want to.
However you'll need some admin knowledge to set this up, for example you should know what is .xsession, a notification daemon, a login manager, and an environment variable.
For extra hardcore, you can start managing your OS with Puppet to have all your configs in one place and be able to easily apply them after reinstalls or on other computers/VMs.
