Why do people still use this overpriced, outdated technology? It's like using an old dial phone in this day and age.

This, but unironically. Rich people get to buy stupid shit, because its not their yearly salary like it is for your mom and dad. You'll understand when youre older

        >>I have so much status because I made a dumb purchase
        >Okay.
Why is this so complicated for you to understand? The reason it's a status symbol is because it shows to normal people "look how rich and powerful I am, that I can waste money on frivolous shit like this". It's the same reason why Bezos wears shirts that cost $1k, why Tate insists on driving sports cars, or why Trump shits in golden toilets.
So of course, there are entire industries that capitalize on this, because poor idiots will spend copious amounts of money to have the appearance of being richer than they really are.
It's more than just owning a watch, it's essentially wearing a flag that says "I am better than you". When Tate constantly asks people "how many Bugattis do you own?", it isn't because there's an inherent logical reason to, it's to put down the other, and reinforce the fact that he belongs to a tribe which has, compared to a tribe which hasn't. For the same reason, kids make fun of other kids on school playgrounds for not having iPhones, or wearing cheap shoes.

You're not a genius just because you see through the facade. Of course a $30 bag on Amazon is just as good and will last as long as a Gucci or Luis Vitton bag. But you must also take into account the social and emotional element. Humans are animals to begin with, we're not all creatures of reason.

I don't know why I bothered to type up all of this...

quite simple. a regular watch lasts up to a year on a single battery. a smart watch lasts maybe half a day

Mechanical watches can be serviced using nothing but pre-industrial technology (at least in theory), which is what makes them appealing to me.

Still, if we are to be completely honest, digital watches are better for all practical purposes. I like different kinds of watches for different reasons.

Watches are israeliteelry for men these days.

I have almost 100 watches and almost all of them are quartz digital, but I also have some quartz analog ones. Mostly Casio, a couple of Timex, and some Swatches.
Initially, I didn't want to add any analog watches to my collection, but then I started to grow fond of them, so I've bought some.
There is a mental difference when reading the time from an analog dial vs a digital display. While the digital display tells you the exact time at a glance, it does not really help you mentally and quantitatively position the hour within the day, the minutes within the hour, or the seconds within the minute.

I forgot to add that I will probably never buy any mechanical watch. They are generally less accurate than quartz ones, unless you go for really high end chronometers. They require periodic maintenance which is costly - imagine doing that every 2-5 years for 100 watches.

        Anonymous

I was die-hard quartz fan, now I wear a mechanical. Mine right now is about 10 seconds slow, I set it a month ago. Every 6 months I have to adjust it for DST anyway, so at worst it's a minute out.

Maintenance costs? It's a 30 dollar movement. If it starts underperforming in a decade, I'll buy another one and swap it out in 5 minutes.

The pros of mechanical is that it's way fricking easier to find what you want. My watch is full custom. The negative of mechanical is that they're bulkier, a similar quartz watch I have is like 8mm thick, my current one is 10.5mm. But that watch hasn't been made for 40 years and there is no sign of anyone else making anything like it again any time soon, because the market is still dinnerplate dogshit instead of 36mm divers.

Depending on the person, it's either purely a fashion accessory, or a mix of fashion accessory and autistic obsession with small mechanical things. Anyone who says they're interested in watches beyond that is a liar.
