What if he fought for the Confederacy, how much change that would have made in the outcome of the war?

He was running a military academy in Louisiana at the start of the war and hated the idea of fighting against his cadets and old West Point bros, but otherwise he had no loyalty to the south, unlike some other Yankee transplants. . It’s interesting to imagine him in command at Vicksburg rather than a tard like Pemberton, a Yankee who married a southern woman and threw in with the Secesh.

Johnston was one of the best Confederate generals of the war. Dixies demonize him for retreating so much unlike their beloved Lee and Jackson who faced the enemy head on. What Dixiecels fail to realize is that the "Get at them Yankees!"-style of warfare was precisely the worst type of approach for the South who lacked the manpower and industry to substain their casualties at the same rate as the North even when they won battles. The reason Grant beat Lee is because Grant was the first Union general to fully grasp the fact that in a straight slugging match, Lee, no matter how tactically brilliant he was, would lose in the long run, which is exactly what happened. Even though Lee won most of his battles against Grant, look who it was that wound up surrending and disbanding his troops at Appomattox.

Lee was a complete moron whenever he wasn’t playing defense and Jackson was a christcuck schizo but in order to uphold their mythological status they’ll endlessly shit on the likes of Johnston and Longstreet, who were by far the superior men

but theyd lose because of inferior manpower and industry.

            >Grant beat Lee
Grant never beat Lee. Grant lost every field battle he ever fought against Lee. Lee's army was intact upon surrender, he was never forced to surrender in battle.
            >Grant was the first to understand that Union men can absorb more bullets than the CSA can produce

hyper aggressive assaults to demoralize the enemy was literally the only practical option.

Bro, the civil war is a conflict where whoever was playing defense and had enough time to properly fortify their position was significantly stronger than the attacker. To qoute Major-General J.F.C. Fuller:
            >Generally speaking, the tactics of this war hinged on the bullet and the trench. From the very beginning the power of the first made itself felt In a manner so unmistakable that there appeared to be no solution to it except by entrenching a front, or by delivering an attack with such a mass of men that some at least would live to reach the enemy's parapet. Assault after assault failed, in fact, it has been calculated that less than one out of every eight assaults succeeded. "One rifle in the trench was worth five In front of it. The attacking columns saw little more before them than a thin and continuous sheet of flame issuing beneath the head-log of the parapet, whilst they themselves marched uncovered against the unseen foe."

Case and point: Robert E. Lee, the "military genius" of the South, never won a battle where he was the initial attacker. The South was never going to win by being too aggressive. They just weren't.

It’s even more hilarious when you realize Robert E. “my entire career up to the war was building defensive forts” Lee wasn’t even competent enough to play the right kind of defense in his own home state lmfao

            >Lee served as an assistant in the chief engineer's office in Washington, D.C. from 1834 to 1837, but spent the summer of 1835 helping to lay out the state line between Ohio and Michigan. As a first lieutenant of engineers in 1837, he supervised the engineering work for St. Louis harbor and for the upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Among his projects was the mapping of the Des Moines Rapids on the Mississippi above Keokuk, Iowa, where the Mississippi's mean depth of 2.4 feet (0.7 m) was the upper limit of steamboat traffic on the river. His work there earned him a promotion to captain. Around 1842, Captain Robert E. Lee arrived as Fort Hamilton's post engineer.[28]

            >hyper aggressive assaults to demoralize the enemy
Shit, maybe if you're a state with fantastic discipline, and a powerful industry to support it you can do a lightning war against another stable country like that, but The Confederacy was not Prussia, and they shouldn't try to fight like they are Prussia.
Honestly I'm shocked they didn't try and fortify instead. The Appalachians to one side and an ocean to the other pretty much guaranties they're only going to be attacked in one direction.

Plus, demoralizing works better when an enemy's attack failed. If the confederates didn't frick with the North, and said that they were just defending themselves, it's a lot easier for Northerners to justify just letting them go, instead of when you attack the North and threaten the Capital, which makes you seem like an existential threat.

Jackson was one of the best. He understood that in local engagements the Yankees had inferior manpower and thus could not sustain a head on fight against the CSA, Jackson ground them down till they were beaten, Jackson is a superior commander 🙂

Lee was good at psychoanalyzing his opponents because he knew many of them from the prewar army and what to expect from them. Grant tripped him up as he didn't really know him at all, just met him once briefly during the Mexican War.
