This. I'm no great fan of the OS, but the M1s are, by most accounts, good reliable machines with good thermal control. Massively overpriced, sure, but they're perfectly good computers, and they hold aftermarket value like crazy, so when she leaves school she can toss it on marketplace or something and get a very respectable ROI.

I've known developers who have used (and loved) their macs for decades, but didn't know the top bar is changing depending on which application is in focus. They didn't know what happens to an application when you minimise it, so they kept opening new windows.
The two main UI elements in MacOS are already fubar, and there's tons of other stupid shit in MacOS (Finder anyone?).
It's by far the worst OS for intuition, Apple only does things different to be different, not to be better.

You can't tell me that in all those years of using a mac that they never accidentally clicked on the desktop, which would change the global menu to the Finder, and so change all the menu commands, which would leave them wondering why opening a new window kept opening Finder windows.

Honestly I don't know how they managed, but I had to explain to them what the bar does. As far as I know they kept hard closing applications or opened new windows from the Dock. My point is, it's not designed in an intuitive way. Windows and Linux are lightyears ahead in intuitiveness in that regard. I myself had quite a few problems with just not knowing how to do the simplest things, which turned out to be needlessly complicated, only on the mac. Often times I read in forums that "this is a power user feature, here's an $80 app that does it though"

You have to open a terminal to install apps in fedora whereas in MacOS you fricking download a .dmg and drag the app’s icon into the applications folder, whose alias is even provided within the .dmg with a fricking arrow to it.

I wish I had saved up and bought a Mac during my cs undergrad years. I ended up going the minimalist route and getting a cheap netbook to run Linux. As it turns out, most distros lacked any support for the display, wireless network adapter was unreliable, both LibreOffice and OpenOffice ran like shit, and battery life went to shit, even worse than windows 7 basic. Meanwhile, my peers with MacBooks (air and pro) had all day battery while also being extremely capable machines.

It really depends on your means. If you can afford it, you should get one. It's one less thing to worry about while you're trying to finish your degree. If not, just have contingencies for when whatever budget laptop inevitably fails, whether due to cheap hardware or a self-destructing OS. I used an external to keep a rolling backup of my system and projects. Important school documents also got backed up to a cloud service as an additional layer of redundancy. If you're a CSE student writing code, use a git service and commit frequently. Nothing sucks worse than losing a day of progress to a busted hdd or corrupted os

HDMI is still the most dominant connector, current gen CPUs are the Ryzen 5000 series don't bother with Intel they are housefires that have 40 percent less battery life, new Ryzen generation is about to drop in 3 months or so but that is already factored in in current prices so you can buy shit right now, ddr5 just came out but it's useless as in good ddr4 is better then the crap first gen ddr5 we have now, i would recommend a Lenovo legion 5 /pro if you want the better screen
Good gaming configuration would be Ryzen 5600 or 5800 if you need extra cores which you probably don't and a rtx 3060, don't buy the 3060 variant for over 1000$ and don't spend over 1200 or 1300 on the 3070 version 3070 is about 30 percent more powerful then the 3060 and has 2gb more VRAM which is good to have if you want to keep it for 5 years

Either an iPad of some sort with apple pencil and keyboard or an M1/M2 MacBook Air. Odds are she's gonna be mostly just doing shit a $400 device can do but most people around her will be using apple products and she's gonna want in on group chats and people airdropping shit left and right, and if you don't have an apple device most people start drooling when they have to transfer files any other way.
Make it easy on her by making it easy on everybody around her. I'd recommend the iPad Air. It's what most of my classmates use. I use a Galaxy Tab S7 Plus. Laptops work best either in pure writing classes or full software classes, tablets are really good for everything in between. As much as one may think they're gonna go back to old notebooks in the future it's a pain in the ass and you're just gonna get rid of paper in the future anyway. Easier to keep electronically.

m1 macbook air one of the best laptops on the market, great for programming, general stuff. Battery life crushes everything else by a tremendous margin, no fan.

Also imagine buying a macbook air with only 256gb of storage and 8gb of ram (for both the CPU and GPU) that can't be upgraded. You could buy a laptop for the same price with 2 nvme slots, replaceable ram, and the ability to open the laptop with screws instead of being glued, and that makes it a difficult desktop replacement.
But personally I don't see why people need a expensive laptop if they care about specs, just buy a desktop for half the price (especially if you don't need a GPU), if you don't already have a display or keyboard or mouse or speakers, that's where the other half of the desktop price comes in.
I don't really see why you would need a laptop in school anyways, if you need notes write it down on paper, or record a video with your phone.
