I love her, but she only reads YA crap like Twilight, 50 Shades of Gray and Bridgerton. I tried to get her to read female-oriented classics like Little Women and Pride and Prejudice since she liked the movie adaptations, but she says they're "too hard". What am I supposed to do now? How can I teach her to appreciate and understand the classics? Or is this a pointless endeavour?

Don’t know, if she’s really dumb it might be impossible. Some of this stuff is just based on intelligence.
>Some of this stuff is just based on intelligence.
lol
Post her number so ee can send reccomendations
It's pointless if she doesn't want to get into classics, obviously.
But like why wouldn't someone want to get into the classics? Why would someone pick Bridgerton shit over crime and Punishment for instance? The only explanation is because that person never read Crime and Punishment so they don't know what they're wasting.
Because they’re not smart enough. Why would someone watch Netflix instead of making groundbreaking Mathematical discoveries and cementing their name in history?
You don't have to be that smart to read classical literature.
You have to be interested in the human condition, in history, in other cultures, in a variety of different outlooks on life and philosophy. That requires a degree of intellectual curiosity which the average person is simply not possessed of. And depending on the type of literature, some pieces will be more impenetrable than others.
>That requires a degree of intellectual curiosity which the average person is simply not possessed of.
Probably the most idiotic sentence i've read on this board this week.
I keep getting reminded why i barely come here anymore.
Cry more, moron. Don’t forget to take your HRT meds.
What an absolute embarrassment your are.
That’s not an argument.
I'm not going to argue with some 17 y/o who thinks reading classics makes him an intellectual and superior to everyone who don't. He will, hopefully, look back on himself in a few years in complete disbelief.
Not everyone who reads is an intellectual, but every intellectual reads.
source?
Vast variance in intelligence is an anthropological fact. Over 50% of adults in the US have not even read a single book in the past year. Of those who do read (mostly women), the most popular books are things like Harry Potter or entry level fiction.
We know from data based on reaction times that the average IQ has decreased about 15 points since 1870. Moreover, literacy rates in those days were about 80%, which is similar to today, but based on analysis of the complexity of prose we can glean that the public was much more literate back then in level of reading ability. This naturally lead to a higher quality of literature which then acquired the title of Classic. Today, this literature is almost impenetrable for the average person, which is why schools are more and more moving away from teaching Shakespeare to analysing rap lyrics.
Pic related for example is US presidential speeches in complexity over time.
Why are you so emotional over this? Produce arguments to the contrary and stop whining.

It's important to note that you are talking about "relative IQ" or morons will respond with "Average IQ is always 100!"
On a side note, in terms of relative IQ, what is "Borderline Mentally moronic" (85) in 1870 would be considered "Average" (100) today. Sleep well tonight, everyone.
>literacy rates were ~80%
Interestingly, how we defined literacy has been being decreased over time. When people say "literacy" they think "can read", but when a statician says "literacy", they mean "has the ability to recognize symbols, at the minimum." Which symbols? Stop signs are the red sign, green light mean go, one dollar is the 1, five dollar is the 5, etc. It might upset some people here to realize, despite their inability to read well, they are in the upper percentage of literacy.
>speech grading scales is from the latter half of the 20th century
>ranks outdated speech and obsolescent turns of phrase as more complex
>ranks contemporary speech as less complex
>somehow anon thinks this proves people were more literate in the past
lmao, I bet this same scale would rank gangster speech from a 30's movie as 15 or 20 on the complexity scale.
Multiple speeches on the graph from the time period are assigned lower grade levels... it measures the number of average syllables per word and words per sentence. The use of Latin and Greek somewhat declined, which contributed to this, you will probably say- however, this in itself reflects the decline in classical education and foreign language acquisition, both of which relate to IQ.
>affirms what I said in my post
>acts like he is refuting me
You're dumb. You're just a useful idiot for someone else.
All you have to do is read their writing and compare it to the writing of today. Even newspapers were better written. This is what you would expect from the drastic drop in intelligence which has occurred since then.
>English spoken in the past is more high IQ...just because it is! OK!
Damn dude. Do you think caveman grunts are the peak of IQ because they are unintelligible to you? I mean think of the finery of the language and the IQ needed to fully understand the subtleties those grunts communicated...
Holy strawman
What's that one speech rated 18 around 1973-1974? Should be either Ford or Nixon. Would like to hear it.
It read more like a statement than an argument, and a correct one at that.
I actually agree with this one. You need curiosity. Your desire to know more about something or someone must be strong enough as to motivate you to actually do it. She probably doesn’t feel a need to read it, even if she knows what’s it about. Don’t forget YA is the lowest common denominator for people who think reading is good, but don’t want to read anything of value. It is the literary equivalent of goyslop. It makes you feel good at yourself for reading but it's practically worthless
>goyslop
Ah, spoken as a true connoiseur of intellectual curiosity
It was the most appropiate word I thought of at the moment. How would you describe YA novels then?
I believe 'zogfeed' is the term you're looking for.
well said
>simply not possessed of.
Embarrassing
>those two choices
You must be an American to have come up with those two extremes
>groundbreaking Mathematical discoveries and cementing their name in history?
Explain to me why that would matter.
>tinder bawds use the app without even knowing who Turing was
Some people feel intimidated, but most are just not interested. I cannot possibly understand what part of this is so difficult to understand.
some people are just not that interested in the past, including past culture. Be glad she reads anything at all, that's already more and more of a rarity.
Nietzsche might give you some perspective, especially Use and Disadvantage of History; we're all a bit too obsessed with past cultural achievements here.
you're dumber than her
That is most likely true.
What a fricking pseud. I'm sure her bull won't ask her to read classics when she goes to him the next night.
>mutt's law
>calls others a pseud
You have to go back.
Do you think linguistic complexity is something subjective? Contemporary speech being ranked as less complex in the study is not a mere value judgement moron.
>>mutt's law
>implying I ever said that the bull is a Black person
Don't be so obvious
But like why would someone want to get into the classics? Why would someone pick Crime and Punishment shit over Bridgerton for instance? The only explanation is because that person never read Bridgerton so they don't know what they're wasting.
Comfort. Women especially are creatures of comfort. They're obsessed with it. The wash and comfortable choice is what a woman will take every time
>Autist actually cannot comprehend that some people might not like the same things he does
moronic pseud.
Yep.
Certified NPCbabble.
>classics
>little women
Post proof you homosexual, take a picture of her with this thread in the frame.
Wtf? Why would I do that?
I've learned to never talk about literature with people who aren't already well-read. Nobody wants to hear about the classics or discuss them and I'm cool with it. That's what my bookclub lit is for.
Trust no one. Not even yourself.
I kneel
Witnessed!
Check'd.
>Even your teeth bite your tongue once in a while.
Holy numbers!
And then you woked up.
Why is the concept of having a girlfriend so unrealistic to you?
heem her, heem that b***h, fricking HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM
this is my girlfriend, op. She reads Blood Merdian, Dying Earth, BoTNS, Stoner, Moby Dick, and the Bible.
Jelly much?
Tell me more about this Blood Merdian book, never heard of it before. What is a Merdian btw?
How big is her penis?
bigger than mine
Femurs too long. That's a man.
>reading classics means u r smart
>reading classics means u r smart
>Not reading at all or reading twilight is as equally intelligent
Yikes!
You're only smart if you have read R A Lafferty. Sorry every dumb person in this thread but you are dumb and gay
If she's cute and nice and you love her then be glad you have her in your life. Marry her and start a family together.
>Marry her and start a family together.
Lmao, I won't be a slave thanks
low iq confirmed
you already are one
>My girlfriend is kinda dumb
>she only reads YA crap like Twilight, 50 Shades of Gray
You’re made for each other
Girls are cuter when they're a bit dumb.
This is getting boring now. These threads are only exist to incite a reaction and its not even fun anymore
Well, the situation I posted is actually true, but you're right that I just created this thread because I thought it would be funny lol
>the situation I posted is actually true
No shit. All women read garbage and are moronic. You aren't the first to discover this
Who gives a shit, let her read what she likes.
Tell her to start with the Greeks
I'm kinda at a loss, everyone. I love my girlfriend and have always envisioned building a life together with her, but she's gotten really self deprecating lately. She got drunk and asked if I minded that she was "so dumb," which obviously had not crossed my mind before, but she kept asking so many times I naturally felt guilty she would say such a thing. She refused to give me back the greek book I was reading while we were on the train after, and I think she's hidden it. I don't know what's up: this is all new. What on earth to do?
She feels mogged by you intellectually and worries that you might soon find yourself a smarter girl.
While some anons will probably give you tips on how to counteract this, in my modest experience that's exactly how such relationships tend to end.
I'm not even smart and she's certainly not less clever than I. But this has happened to me before exactly as you put it and I'm petrified.
Just let her have her own shit and if it's not enough for you, don't date women that aren't already into the classics of their own accord. How fricking hard is that?
Which Pride and Prejudice adaption does she like? It better be the 1995 one.
50 Shades is now considered YA? Intredasting.
My wife is moronic, not like the drooling, can't wipe her own ass kind but like the can't do math without her fingers and can't live on her own because she can't understand planning for the future. She's able to hold down a job at an ice cream factory but gets filtered by any job that requires cash handling or interpersonal communication. She likes when I read Victorian literature to her and she nods along and pretends to understand what's going on besides basic plot points, it's pretty based. Just try getting an even dumber GF.
This
My most fun and loving woman was dumber than a pile of bricks. I remember teaching her basic English phrases and how she laughed in celebration whenever she pronounced them correctly
Quite hard to compare those women to OP's GF. She is notdumber than average, she's exactly in the middle. The problem is that OP is right there with her and tries to pretend to be smart. Instead of understanding her limitations and interesrs he's trying to force classics on her, instead of eliminating bad influences on his GF he needs to prove his pseud identity of a classic literature Very soi behavior.
sex with chitanda
With who?
Latching on to this thread to ask anons for advice. What do I do if my girlfriend is a pseud? She’ll read classics, poetry, or other novels and then not understand a thing and ask me to explain it. It’s all simple stuff too. I had to explain to her what fascism and communism were when she read about them in a novel. Don’t even get me started on trying to explain philosophy to her. I asked her why she doesn’t read simpler stuff or look up concepts she doesn’t understand while she’s reading about but she refuses to do so. I also asked her why she reads these kinds of books if she doesn’t understand them and her reasoning amounted to wanting to portray an image of being an academic or intellectual.
Her behavior is really starting to bother me, to the point that I just try and avoid any academic discussion with her. I feel I’d be less bothered if she was just dumb and didn’t even try to read. I’m not saying I’m a genius either but I usually have a good grasp on what I read and talk about. Am I just being a prick, anons?
No, you're right. But all you can do here is show her the right path, if she doesn't wanna follow it that's on her. In any case, you need to talk to her and convey your thoughts in a non-aggressive way, otherwise things won't change.
She just finds it sexy when you (probably over-)confidently explain intellectual shit to her. What's the problem? Just be glad you have a gf that wants to listen to you talk IQfy, and doesn't feel threatened by you being smarter.
who cares? all that matters is how she looks
OP's girl probably has a fried attention span. It's not lack of intelligence, it's lack of patience, and lack of experience in reading unfamiliar literary styles.
>I have le gf!
Go frick yourself OP. Fricking tourist
troony
Women are still cats and birds. Or at the best, cows.
>girlfriend reads stuff she likes
>i try to force her to read 800 page boring shite.
Sounds like you're low iq. Maybe try just leaving her well alone.
>but i want to have riviting conversations by candlelight in bed.
Tough breasts Black person, sounds like youre too dumb to get smart girls so try to make average girls smart for some kink reason.
I concur. At the very least YA shit is more intellectually stimulating than female romance novels (AKA porn for women)
It's not about intelligence. Women (and neurotypical men) consume media so they can talk about it with other people. They don't care about some crusty old book, abrasive album, or 3 hour long European film that they can't use as a discussion piece with their friends. Trying to discuss those things with someone who isn't already interested will make them look weird. They aren't interested in media in and of itself, only what the media can do for them.
Being a Normal sounds awful
It is. Why do you think they drink so much and take all that medication?
Under the hood normalgays are probably more depressed and miserable than your average imageboard homosexual, and they don't even have the emotional intelligence to understand why.
