Anyone have a guilty pleasure to read the popular books? They're usually not that good but fills my time.
I read Mexican Gothic before this and it was so generic I think it was written by AI.

The worst is when you borrow a book that's 50hrs long and you only have 21 days to listen to it. If others have holds you can't renew so you basically have to treat listening to it like it's a part time job.

Genuinely. Just pirate it. Free media heck yeah has a big repo with an audiobook search engine and a bunch of assorted audiobook websites.
I understand when it's a relatively obscure book, in that case there might be no other choice. Popular shit, on the other hand, is everywhere.

Honestly, a fascinating series (at least the first 3). Don't expect deep characters because Chinese writer, but the imagination of the author really shines and it was cool seeing Chinese culture seep into the writing.

You don't even know the normie book scene. The ebook is 18wks wait and the physicals book is 10+ wait list (no eta b/c no late fee policy) (they're buying an extra copy because it's too popular).

I waited 3mnths to get Mexican Gothic (btw white women love Mexican Gothic) and a couple weeks for Crazy Rich Asian. If the media is more gear towards women the waitlist is crazy.

I'm european and got my copy in 2 days like 2 weeks ago. I'm just shocked people actually wait for an audio book loan. Is this some marketing scheme to make people lose patience and just get them to buy physical?

It's probably a licensing thing by the publisher, libraries still have to buy their stock after all, they've probably paid for just three digital copies of this audiobook which means they can't just hand them out freely.

Pls help. I'm a thirdie so I don't understand how borrowing ebooks works. Is it some kind of deal where the lender only has a small finite number of licenses to the ebook?

Why don't normies just pirate the ebook or get an audible subscription?

          Yes

          Because they're dumb

No. I actively avoid popular books- don't get me wrong, it's not a hipster or contrarian thing, something just switches in my head. Maybe all the hype stresses me out? I don't know. But if the book actually sounds interesting, I'll pick it up a few years later, after the hype dies down and everyone has moved on to something else.

I support the local library. They have amazing free resources and events.

You can just pirate in advance and borrow from the library to make them feel good while leeching off their other services you do use.

homie just pirate them. I did.
I feel like they’re like someone telling you about their awesome RPG setting with all the crazy homebrew plot, desperately trying to stuff as many cool ideas they’ve heard about into one setting with no real regard for storytelling. The third book goes completely off the rails in this regard. Time skipping, technology level jumps, clown car of characters coming and going (all with the same chinesey names so good luck keeping track).

Foundation did this a lot better. Dune did it a lot better. It’s tough trying to create wide time and tech spans and have it make sense. I think The Expanse managed not so much time skip but gradually introducing tech and plot events that logically changed the setting and complicated the story.

Just as an aside of hack writing we keep returning to the fricking UN and its descendants in this series. I don’t know why bad writers (usually in films and tv) are so obsessed with pretending that useless organization is what makes the world go round. It’s like what anyone with surface level political knowledge imagines rules a planet?

I don’t entirely hate it, it’s just overstuffed with ideas, some cool concepts, but overall it’s not well written enough to pull this shit together. And of course it’s what 1500 pages about of a commitment. Once books start bloating to 500 pages they really need to do better, but in most cases it’s just an abundance of filler.

The author is Chinese, anon. It'd be shocking if his political knowledge wasn't surface level.

the idea of waiting to "borrow" an audio file that can be infinitely replicated because the library has to create artificial scarcity in the name of "intellectual property" is beyond moronic. It's completely backward. The library at its core is in league with pirates in an age where everything is digitized and the idea of ownership is being stripped away.
