Good character motivation is the foundation for a good novel.
iirc Lajos Egri's book says pretty much the same thing. Characters drive the story and therefore need strong emotions/opinions

Dude its not a math problem. You have to have a plot. If you have a plot you write it. If your plot is shit so is your book. If your writing is shit you just re write it until its good. But you have to have A PLOT. Which you failed to mention. Do characters just start marching through the woods and shit happens?

I just write. Why would I read a method on how to write a novel by someone whose best known work is on how to write a novel? Read the masters. Don't read how-to books written by hangers-on.
