That's a good point. Why do we even have police departments and prisons? The criminals would surely get punished with eternity in hell, so why even bother catching them?
You can call it cope, but I think even from a physicalist point of view, you will find that these matters aren't as unreasonable as they first appear.
We're aware there's at least eleven dimensions, and at best we have crude mathematical tools to make abstractions past the 5th or 6th dimension. It's not unreasonable to assume there might be entities in these dimensions; I'd say it's about as reasonable as saying that there might be other life forms in the universe (the belief seems sound with the vastness of the universe and conditions for it).
Deducing from that, we can potentially be part of or access these dimensions as entities ourselves. With the axiom that this possibility exists, it follows that life after death may be one likely such way of accessing them. As even our (quite crude) third and fourth dimension that we dwell in is absurdly complicated for us animals, it's easy to see that things get very complex and far beyond our understanding in a hurry the higher up you go. I would maintain what we call justice and punishment or hell and paradise may very well take forms of an equally complex measure. It seems as poor a wager to assume that all simply ends after your brain circuitry fails, as it is to deny the possibility there's other life forms or entities or forces at work in our universe.
