okay?

okay IQfy. explain to me why we are not using Antarctica as a huge heat sink?
give me one reason why we are not building huge GPU farms there? or in general, running any machines that generate heat there.

    Because of the tunnels
The less people going to Antarctica in general, the better

The spiders will destroy anything you put in the tunnels

      great.
they can move to antarctica and settle in the land that was cleared from the ice. it will be warm from all the heat radiating from the GPUs and machinery

tell me how expensive it is to build a GPU farm in the most hostile place on earth compared to spending money on liquid cooling.

Because I haven't figured out how to reach it yet. Can't just buy a plane ticket there.

go to argentina and ride a boat there in summer. the temperature can be as high as 18C in some areas. it's less hostile than some places in russia or canada

Argie here, unironically there was a company (IIRC from Canada) that sort of did this, during the crypto craze, they built a huge Bitcoin farm on Tierra del Fuego province (the big island at the bottom of South America), both to take advantage of the cold climate and the huge subsidies on electricity we had at the time. Just mining the shit out of those bitcoins courtesy of the argie taxpayer. That gravy train has ended though, since they are bringing our electricity bills closer to international prices, but I bet they made a killing while it lasted.

So OP's idea is not that stupid.

    Costs are prohibitively high.
There are places in Northern Europe and North America that are just as cold and more easily accessible.

yes but there is probably a lot of legal hoops you have to go through since you are in another country.
antarctica is still mostly unclaimed. and the most of the claims are just larp. no one will bother attacking a group of autists maintaining a GPU farm in Antarctica.

        >no one will bother attacking a group of autists maintaining a GPU farm in Antarctica.
        Yeah, they will.
But, most importantly, that group of autists isn't going to be able to provide all the infrastructure needed to support it.

        >antarctica is still mostly unclaimed
No. It's all claimed by at least one country. Some parts by several. By treaty, there's no economic exploitation going on down there, so no need for anyone to fight over it.
Putting a server farm there will probably start a war.

        >no one will bother attacking a group of autists
Tell that to the redditors that built a man-made island just outside of Thailand because the area was "unclaimed". Putting people and resources in an area that is not protected by any country or treaty means that anyone can frick you up without fear of consequences.

Yeah, you try building anything on the "unclaimed" bit and see how long it takes someone to kick your teeth in.

Why don't you just build a liquid cooled computer and use antifreeze?

  11. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Frick that, just use a vacuum cleaner with a really long hose to your house and suck the cold over your way, then the exhaust from the vacuum will be ice cold like your beers and can be plumbed to the air intake of your PC. Easy as pie. Bonus points if the air coming from your pc only adds a temp rise of 20C, because then the -40C air coming in only gains 20C hence you have -20C air coming from the PC which would be slick in the summer since it's like free aircon.
