It can’t be understated, most Indians died decades before a white man ever saw their lands. The diseases spread faster than men could travel with horses, and Europeans were given to an impression of a vast uninhabited land because that’s what was there by the time they showed up.
Anon its amazing they brought over Christianity but almost everything else there is wrong. They came largely to plunder and subjugate people, which they did, it was not a humanitarian mision. As for hygiene, Europeans thought natives had too good hygiene. If anything conquistadors set hygiene back.
Not all of them were there for plunder. Some came for good reasons and for the benefit of the natives. I don’t deny some Spaniards did badly, in fact most did, probably. But others were genuinely good people.
Just because some of them were there for academic reasons or other, doesn't really chnage the fact that it was a conquering and plundering mission. Saying some Spaniards did badly is like saying "some people involved in the slave trade, traded slaves". The presence of some good people doesn't change what the spanish were there to do. It is extremely disingenuous to say otherwise or present a minority as the norm. To give out another example, it would be like saying the Japanese invasion of China should be remembered for cultural culinary exchanges , and afterwards maybe that war that happened in the background.

Laughable (specially coming from the conquistadors), the only thing the mexica were more anal about than their ritual wars to obtain sacrifices was hygiene. Just compare the description of the sanitary state of Tenochtitlan/Mexico City before and after it fell.
Actually, I am interested in this sanitation topic. Do we have any in depth analysis of Aztec sanitation? They must have had something to be able to have a city that big.
