This is by far P&V's worst translation (in general their Dostoevsky is weak, their Tostoy and Bulgakov are phenomenal, however). McDuff is really nice and recently Katz published his; I haven't read it but his crime and Punishment was really good, only other translator that compared was Ready. Garnett is extremely overrated.

Dostoy in his native Russian is a notoriously brutish and unpretty writer. McDuff and and Avsey especially Avsey try to make him so. Garnett just doesnt understand his syntax or his satire well enough to make a good translation
P&V far and away most accurately capture Dostoy’s clunky style and more than anything they are the only translations Ive read that accurately convey his humour.
Odd you praise their Tolstoy but criticize their Dostoy, when hands down their Dostoy is the most accurate for any book but their Tolstoy is debatable. Personally I preferred Anthony Birdges W&P though their AK is good >t. second gen Russian immigrant with grandma who taught Russian literature in both Petersburg and the UK. When P&Vs BK came out in the 90s she told our family that finally English readers could understand the true Dostoyevsky
Can anyone tell me how the translation by Constance Garnett compares to others? Is there any significant difference in reading experience? The "She/He ejaculated.." always get me lol.
Strether or McGuigan. Both have their own peculiar weaknesses, though.

This book hasn't even begun, Nihil was unbound and I don't think anyone cares...
Garnett is the most literal.
There has never been a need for additional translations past Garnett.

Didn't we have this debate when Katz was cracked & P&V completely btfo'd Katz.
Though, I still prefer Maude for Tolstoy
