Don't give your parents a Linux device. It's not worth it.

That being said, Arch is perfectly stable.

      Will it be Linux
      I didn't say Arch isn't stable

      macOS

      macOS isn't a distro linux

Unironically this, why even bother with all this linux shit especially for normies who don't give a shit about tech when MacOS perfected the Unix desktop experience but freetards are too proud to admit it

      I didn't say Arch isn't stable (2x)

      Kubuntu
      OpenSUSE Leap with KDE Plasma

These two are made for mouse using normies.

Don't install ubuntu or anything with GTK based desktop.

      Remember: GTKancer

I know Qt haters, but you're the first GTK hate that I know (thx for the suggestions)

By Stallman's beard, make a suggestion

        >More Qt haters than GTK haters
That's because we there are considerably more stupid / clueless people in this world.

That's also the reason why democracy is a hilariously idiotic joke.

slight delay on app startup. they're not going to notice

nobody notices snap delays anymore, even after a cold boot on a fresh install, and I'm speaking off an old x230 experience

No, GTK is terrible to the end user too.
All GTK applications, struggle with performance, and have a very poor cross-platform functionality when it comes to native themes.

highly doubt OP's parents would be willing to learn a whole new OS just because he doesn't want to use windows

doubt his parents even use windows considering he is purchasing them a laptop.
Windows is not the standard OS btw.

it's their first laptop, they're using only smartphones

if they only use smartphones they're not going to want to learn all this shit just because of OP's linux autism

            I see no problem

I'd say kubuntu, though osx is moronproof so there is that.

It looks more lightweight than Ubuntu

All they're going to do is use a web browser, it doesn't matter what OS he gives them as long as that one thing works. Hell a dirt cheap Chromebook would be fine.

you parents don't care about the distro, what you have to do is set it up for them so they can use the computer with as less friction as possible.
install the distro that is the less painful to set up and manage / maintain since you are not going to tinker with it and neither will your parents.
to me Ubuntu is the best choice as it has a good enough UI, works OOTB thanks to great drivers support, lots of packages that are easy to install and a LTS that just got released a week ago.
