That's 100% due to the fact that his twin sister died at childbirth.

She didn't die in childbirth, but they were twins born premature. It was depression era and they didn't have enough food so they chose to feed Philip instead (which was the style at the time) and she died shortly after. There was a twin grave with his sister and his name waiting for him all his life.

I admire PKD but his prose was ass.

You are correct but a strong and unique point of view is so much more important than pretty writing. Updike wrote like the birds sing but like them he had nothing to say, and so nobody cares anymore. Dick and Lovecraft and Dostoyevsky transcend aesthetics.

I admire PKD but his prose was ass.

his prose isn't bad, he has his own quirky style but isn't incoherent with it and it flows smoothly

It's adequate. Sometimes his plotting leaves something to be desired but he was taking a huge variety of drugs

I’ve always heard this here but I’ve found him surprisingly smooth in his writing m. I heard this from anons here before I ever any read Dick and expected something much worse, but it’s really not bad, it’s not very poetic and frilly, it’s more workmanlike, minimalistic, and streamlined. It does the job well and he’s a technically capable writer. And I think he sometimes gets into some nice pseudo-stream-of-consciousness or dream passages (like one of Tagomi in The Man in the High Castle, another being Jason Taverner’s dream in Flow My Tears) that have a strange sparse lyrical beauty to them. I’ve read way worse stylists (but with ideas/plotting/characters interesting enough to make it worth it), I find the judgment of PKD’s “bad prose” to be strongly overstated. Sure, he’s not Updike whom another poster mentioned (wonderful to read if you just want to read a beautiful style, by the way), but he’s even more interesting in his concepts and ideas than Updike and PKD probably will be remembered more than him as time passes.

i'm not op. wait, so you actually think every time an author's face is posted this is meant as an invitation to debate his attractiveness? you're pretty deranged even for a homosexual

It is very strange to assume that the reason someone posted a picture of an author on a literature board, is to elicit comments about their attractiveness. Especially a male.
You are a homosexual of the highest degree.

Not him/her but I am curious. What IS the reason to post photos of an author's face on a literature board? It always came across as odd to me too.

      VALIS
Some very interesting musings in his Exegesis
They overlap with what society would dub “mental illness”, but still some very interesting and intelligent ideas in there. Even while writing schizo-ramblings, they were very intelligent compared to other schizo-ramblings you can find.

Can someone explain the point of this book to me? Is it just questioning the broader nature of our reality? I thought it would be just a fun exploration of alternative history but what PKD was trying to say with this novel seems unclear and as if the novel is not flushed out enough. Also where should I go from here with PKD? I read this after Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep which I really enjoyed. Which his other novels are worth the time? High Castle was a little underwhelming. I've heard recomendations for Flow my Tears and Ubik.
