Can someone like this be saved? I mean not necessarily in a religious way, but just reasoned with is all. Even if you're an atheist, suicide still makes little inherent sense since you also believe there is no alternative to being alive, there is no afterlife of any kind, so on paper it seems like a losing game. Assuming there is no way of convincing someone like this that its possible to deal with suffering in a healthy way, then is it better to be alive to suffer than to simply not be alive at all?

How does one determine how good their life is? It seems like a strange question, but consider all the people living in poor African shitholes that have no desire for suicide. Its clear that actual living standards are only loosely related to your personal choice to live.
Well yeah, it's obviously not about your standard of living. Those Africans presumably enjoy their lives and have motivations to live, which is why they're not suicidal. That suffices to make one's life worth living, other things being equal, and you can just know that your life has those kinds of features through introspection, since those things are just mental properties.
