Plex

Tell me about your Plex server. What do you run it on? I have an old Shield TV and a Synology NAS and the Shield is buggy as hell. Do I just need to get a new Shield? A new NAS? Some other shit? Please advise.

Also Plex General.

Have it on a Synology NAS and use it on a PS5 & Android phone. They work okay except the PS5 doesn't really like HEVC content. I generally just end up hard encoding subs for animu and all other media to x264 so I don't have to worry about shit not working.

This. Why would you want Plex if you have all your shit on a NAS?

Transcoding. You can watch your media on basically every device. I have a roku that I hook up to CRTs and it just works.

I just run it on one of my Linux boxes at home. Clients are Rokus. Everything works fine.

I run it on a nuc with a J5005, but it makes more sense to build a small server with the ITX-J5005, which is btw listed in the corresponding /hsg/ thread: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yl414kIy9MhaM0-VrpCqjcsnfofo95M1smRTuKN6e-E
iGPU supports h.265 decoding, low tdp and runs with up to 16gb of lddr3. Obviously this relies on you having payed the shekels for gpu transcode, but live cpu transcoding for video streaming is moron tier. So if you're too cheap to pay for the pass during a sale go for jellyfin.

Run jellyfin in docker on a ds920+, finds media fine but playback results in dropped frames over my local lan and Wifi no matter what settings I use. However browsing to media via my pc in Windows explorer and playing through mpv results in perfect playback and no dropped frames at all. Anyone have any idea why this happens? The client I'm using is a Google chromecast with google tv.

Plex' android client is just REALLY shit. I can't say Jellyfin was any better the last time I tried it. Maybe it's better on Apple TV? No idea.

Why not just use it through Kodi's Plex plugin?

Tried that through the kodi app for android. Took a good minute to even start playing a 20gb 1080p file.

It works rather well on my Fire 2021 tablet. What devices did you use? Of course a pricy apple device would triumph over cheap android but if you just use cheap chink android shits then that one is on you.

An nvidia shield pro isn't exactly cheap. Feel kinda fricked since it was recommended as the best device for plex.

If you're hosting multiple people - find an Nvidia P2000 if you can get one relatively cheap - you can have a couple 4k streams or 10-15x 1080p transcode streams run at the same time with the cpu doing practically 0 work.

Some normal geforce cards are locked into 1-2 encoder streams for live recording twitch zoomers, but supposedly the capability of all the encoder streams of the pro cards are in the phsyical die and you can unlock them with modified drivers. Haven't tried.

Separate your argggh matey apps/services into a VM with bridged networking or a low power SFF box so you can just easily suspend them independently of your plex server.

I bought an old gaming PC from a recycling center yesrs ago. Works with everything I throw at it. 31TB of storage. Whole infra too.
Plex, Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, qbittorrent, DDNS client.
TV has a built in app. I also have Android app and desktop app.
Plex is port forwarded. Radarr and Sonarr too (with auth) so I can use nzb360 from my phone.

I haven't touched an actual torrent site in months. Everything is added on a schedule. I can watch or chromecast from anywhere and queue up movies from anywhere.

    Comfy as shit

Integrates more seamlessly into radarr and sonarr. That's it

    what is plex?

      Anonymous

it's a media server that allows you to host your own shit, takes care of organizing stuff, metadata, transcoding (if you need).

it has very good client support

I have most of the extra parts to put together a separate box for hosting my server, but I I don't want to pay for the memory right now and I'm worried about the extra power draw.

Curious about you guys' server set ups though and how much power they end up drawing per month.

I just slapped in on a low end gaming PC I built for my GF.

i3 10100 and a 1050 Ti, super comfy system, my gf uses it for low end gaming, and I can usually still get 3 streams to devices, while she is gaming.

I use it mostly for movies, and watching movies simultaneously with friends is pretty easy, and i like that each of us controls our client.

I have lots of TV shows and Movies, and tons of porn. I used stash in the past, but it is way more trouble than its worth, it just looks better visually.

slightly related question: What's the most open source you can get with android TV? Like I'm pissed off at the shield TV because it's full of ads and all the typical telemetry. Performance isn't even that great. I run a hardware media server with Jellyfin that I access through the app on the shield, but we also like to watch Amazon prime sometimes, so basically I need a Widevine L1 device that is not filled with garbage.

You could just go full autism and get a dedicated nettop/SFF pc for the living room. A quad core i5 often isn't more than 200 bucks, and you never have to worry about an app being israelied off of an appstore when you have a full web-browser. Just get a living room friendly remote and bump the DPI up so you can read everything.

sure that'd work, but for some reason some things work better on androidTV. for example amazon doesn't complain about VPN usage when I use the stupid vpn app on androidTV, but somehow if I tunnel the shield device with my pfsense firewall the app complains. the AV system works great with the CEC controls, although I'm sure there must be a solution for computers too. Plus the UX is pretty seamless I think the gf would be turned off by having to open a browser on the TV. Now its all click click click on the shield remote (ooops, pressed the netflix button again by accident, why the frick doesnt this have a mute button?)

          >and then after all that, he didnt even have like riverdale or anything only these cartoons and some "lets phone saul" show or something
          >idk why we couldnt just put on netflix, everyone has it unless youre poor AND have no friends to lend you their account

My Plex runs on k8s with quicksync for hardware transcoding, media is mounted from a supermicro-based 24-bay virtualized NAS via NFS.
My most used client is Apple TV with Infuse.
