Putting new components in non-modular hardware needs to become a more popular niche.

Putting new components in non-modular hardware needs to become a more popular niche. Things are faster now, but build quality was unmatched as late as 20-15 years ago.

I've been waiting for the concept of Sleeper Laptops to become a thing for way too fricking long.

Yeah but it's easier now since Apple Silicon motherboards are much smaller, besides the only machine people like this work on is the G4 iMac.
What I REALLY want to see is someone put an M1 inside a CRT G3. Or inside a 17 inch PowerBook.

        About that Powerbook retrofit:

It's a bit older than the 17-inch G4 models, but I love the look of the 500 series Powerbooks; this is truly one of the coolest mods I've ever seen

I think I watched that video before. What's that trackpad exactly? The original one? He said some coding was necessary for it to work. Does it have multitouch? At least for right clicking

Original trackpad converted to USB output. There's a link in the video description for more info on the build process, although if you're looking to build one yourself it seems like there's no real procedure to follow, and it almost seems as hard as designing the whole thing from scratch. A lot of the design choices BillyTheKid made were seemingly done on-the-fly with careful soldering and reading of datasheets.

As for multitouch, the 500 series powerbooks were the first Apple laptops to even have a touchpad - multitouch for scrolling and right-clicking only came about 10 years later with the 1.5GHz G4 (I think?), but there's conceptually no reason a multitouch one can't be modded in.

The only thing apple needed to do was include another button for right clicking

Doesn't make sense to include a whole extra button for right-clicking when it didn't do anything in classic MacOS. Of course, nowadays that's a problem, but even Windows laptops solve it the same way Macbooks do nowadays with the 2-finger right-click

Why couldn't they just put all the hardware behind the screen? Why does a desktop need to be thin?

that's not entirely true, some of the oldest macbooks are now literally falling apart. all parts made of some kind of plastic or rubber will last 30 years maximum

They used cheap recycled plastic moron. Apple was in financial dire straits as early as 1993. Conversely their computers from the 80s hold up much better despite being older. This was a common issue reported on PowerPC forums even in the early 2000s when the PowerMacs were barely 10 years old.

G3 iMacs crumble apart from the inside-out (who thought supporting the heavy CRT with plastic was a good idea?), hinges snap and paint chips off of Titanium G4 Powerbooks, and even the Aluminum design language that followed is prone to scratches and dents

I pass by a 92 Nissan 300ZX in an HOA community with no garages but doesn't allow canopies or tarps. That thing probably hasn't moved under it's own power in 4 years.
