Putting new components in non-modular hardware needs to become a more popular niche. Things are faster now, but build quality was unmatched as late as 20-15 years ago.
I've been waiting for the concept of Sleeper Laptops to become a thing for way too fricking long.

Same as this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34en3ET7cqY

Yeah but it's easier now since Apple Silicon motherboards are much smaller, besides the only machine people like this work on is the G4 iMac.
What I REALLY want to see is someone put an M1 inside a CRT G3. Or inside a 17 inch PowerBook.
About that Powerbook retrofit:
It's a bit older than the 17-inch G4 models, but I love the look of the 500 series Powerbooks; this is truly one of the coolest mods I've ever seen
I think I watched that video before. What's that trackpad exactly? The original one? He said some coding was necessary for it to work. Does it have multitouch? At least for right clicking
Original trackpad converted to USB output. There's a link in the video description for more info on the build process, although if you're looking to build one yourself it seems like there's no real procedure to follow, and it almost seems as hard as designing the whole thing from scratch. A lot of the design choices BillyTheKid made were seemingly done on-the-fly with careful soldering and reading of datasheets.
As for multitouch, the 500 series powerbooks were the first Apple laptops to even have a touchpad - multitouch for scrolling and right-clicking only came about 10 years later with the 1.5GHz G4 (I think?), but there's conceptually no reason a multitouch one can't be modded in.
The only thing apple needed to do was include another button for right clicking
Doesn't make sense to include a whole extra button for right-clicking when it didn't do anything in classic MacOS. Of course, nowadays that's a problem, but even Windows laptops solve it the same way Macbooks do nowadays with the 2-finger right-click
>sleeper laptops
It's a thing for IBM thinkpads
Sauce me up b0ss
Haven't done it myself but it looks somewhat like this

I just want a trashcan mac remake.
Bait
That thing is tiny and the monitor sucks
Meant to say ugly not tiny
And? It has SOVL. Unlike this... "thing".
neither have sovl but the newer one looks better (and more soulful)
>ugly ass chin
>but look how THIN it is!
Why couldn't they just put all the hardware behind the screen? Why does a desktop need to be thin?
I wait for a new battery tech to replace in my phone.
>Things are faster now, but build quality was unmatched as late as 20-15 years ago.
that's not entirely true, some of the oldest macbooks are now literally falling apart. all parts made of some kind of plastic or rubber will last 30 years maximum
>some of the oldest macbooks are now literally falling apart
Ones from the 90's when Stevie "Totally not AIDS" Jobs wasn't in charge
LITERALLY FALLING APART AFTER JUST 30 YEARS
Stuff from the 2000's is fine as a motherfricker
They used cheap recycled plastic moron. Apple was in financial dire straits as early as 1993. Conversely their computers from the 80s hold up much better despite being older. This was a common issue reported on PowerPC forums even in the early 2000s when the PowerMacs were barely 10 years old.
G3 iMacs crumble apart from the inside-out (who thought supporting the heavy CRT with plastic was a good idea?), hinges snap and paint chips off of Titanium G4 Powerbooks, and even the Aluminum design language that followed is prone to scratches and dents
>the Aluminum design language that followed is prone to scratches and dents
I feel like that's user error. It doesn't happen on its own.
Years ago, I tossed an Atom ITX board into a broken tape deck to act as a music server.
Did you hook up the buttons to act as media controls?
That is the most beautiful computer I've ever seen
It’s ugly and you know it
Why are you such a tasteless gay
u r
that's why they don't make them like that anymore
Because the CEO is a homosexual like you
15-20 years ago, young dudes with a little disposable income would retrofit classic cars
now they're retrofitting ewaste because boomers priced them out of car ownership
sad to see
>boomers priced you out of home ownership and controlled what you can do with your driveway to keep projects out
I pass by a 92 Nissan 300ZX in an HOA community with no garages but doesn't allow canopies or tarps. That thing probably hasn't moved under it's own power in 4 years.
