>Come As You Are
>Heart Shaped Box
I'm a big Nirvana fan so I'm always interested to read more about the band. Plus, it was cool to read a contemporary account of what their popularity was like.
Heart Shaped Box was easily the worst book I read this year, many anons tried to warn me against reading it but I figured I'd give it a shot and it really was not great
I liked Azerrad's "Our Band Could Be Your Life" as I am a fan of several of the bands written about in the book. I just got pic related, which might be up your alley
I've heard good things about Our Band Could Be Your Life. Corporate Rock Sucks looks pretty good, I was really into Black Flag when I was younger
some more punk/rock stuff to check out:
Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain
Nico: The End by James Young
Lipstick Traces by Greil Marcus
Last Gang In Town by Marcus Gray
A Riot of Our Own by Johnny Gray and Garry Barker
Transformer: The Lou Reed Story by Victor Bockris
And the compilations:
Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung by Lester Bangs
A prostitute Just Like The Rest by Richard Meltzer
never heard of these guys, i don't know much about the critical aspect of rock stuff. they seem kinda wacky
They are wacky, for better or for worse, they basically invented the whole rock critic genre and both have a love/hate relationship to rock and its (often overblown) sense of its own social importance.
so the precursor to pitchfork posting the video of that ape pissing in its own mouth as a review for that Jet album type of thing or more of a snobby Harold Bloom kind of thing?
I'll give them a look
Meltzer is definitely closer to the ape pissing, he skewers everyone, himself included. Bangs is a bit more sincere, but more famous; his back and forth interviews with Lou Reed are hilarious, each trying to out-troll the other.
>his back and forth interviews with Lou Reed are hilarious, each trying to out-troll the other.
I'm sure that was something else in the 60s-70s. I hope these are in the book
any other non rock/punk recs? I like that music but I'll read a book, especially non fiction, about almost anything
>Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain
again heard great things about this but i'm not sure i can get behind the style. just reading comments from people seems like it wouldn't make an engaging read. Meet Me in the Bathroom does the same thing
It's hilarious if you're already familiar with the bands/personalities covered, Joey Ramone's brother Mickey Leigh is esp funny, takes the piss out of everyone.
Because you read Technological Slavery. I’d recommend:
>The People's Republic of Walmart
> Godel Escher Bach
>From AI to zombies
Those seem really interesting. I think about Technological Slavery, Into the Wild and Stand Out of Our Light a lot.
I don't know if I can get through 2000 pages of from ai to zombies, though
>I don't know if I can get through 2000 pages of from ai to zombies, though
Do it. It’s 100% worth it. Probably my favorite book it was originally the best threads from a blog called less wrong. Get the audiobook so you can listen to it while driving or doing a low key task.
We'll see, my cap right now is about 600 pages so I'll have to work up to it. Kindly Ones may take me until next year to finish
Where is that pic from?
I know it's some collection of sci-fi stories.
no idea, found it on here a long time ago. tineye says it's called "The General Zapped an Angel" by Karel Thole from 1970
