The average samurai was literally 4'10" and 95lb without exaggeration, in comparison the typical euro of the time was around 5'6" and 145lb, even the typical mainland Chinese were around 5'3" and 130lb, let that sink in

No. Goryeo Koreans were smaller then Joseon Koreans and they were seen as shorter then Song Chinese as well at least in the 12th century

            Anonymous

Lol no, maybe northern Chinese were close to Korean sized but southern Chinese were almost as small as Japanese, the Korean Peninsula has always been known in Asia as having unusually large people which was immediately noticed by westerners

European Knights were often far larger than that, I suspect the same is true about Japan’s warrior caste

Nope that was the warrior class, its why their entire tactics revolved around having 20+ of these little manlets surround a single continental opponent, 1v1 was an impossible affair for the jap samurais and they were distinctly aware of this due to their size, they literally have a gene that is related to pygmyism...

Joseon Koreans are not the same as Goryeo koreans so that western account is mute. It obviously hasnt always been the case like you claim because Xu Jing in his illustrated accounts of Goryeo said that Koreans were shorter then the Chinese and were tall hats which made them look odd

They weren't all inherently warriors just because they were Samurai. Hideoyoshi banned meritocratic promotion of the Japanese caste system so Samurai didn't need to be a fighter at all to hold their nobility. Many in the Edo period were just shitty money lenders or fat ass bureacrats working in an office.

Shaving the head makes it easier to lose heat. Even the Sinic top knot has it shaven in the middle during the summer and it just seems like a full head of hair

        >Even the Sinic top knot has it shaven in the middle during the summer and it just seems like a full head of hair
Doubt. Because of neo-confucianism, cutting your hair was considered a major sin

Source? Only Taoist priests and some ethnic minorities were allowed to retain the topknot during the Qing, the Han vehemently resisted the queue order due to shaving the pate.

Its from the 箕山風俗圖帖. The inner head had to be shaved or trimmed because if it's too dense its hard to do a top knot. The pictures are a step by step process.

Was this practice ever done within China before the Qing? I've only seen illustrations of Qing era Taoist priests that combine the shaved Manchu pate with a topknot.

I couldn't find any evidence on the fact. I just found it interesting one of the more ardent neo confucian nation would break that rule so easily. I've also read that Children in china didn't need to adhere to it either so maybe there is a bit of leeway

afaik the topknot was only required during adulthood, adolescent males had the option of utilizing some different hairstyles. I've just never come across any literary or pictorial evidence that this practice was accepted for adult males.

There is nothing stylish about powerful bald men inventing hairstyles for balding men, and then forcing other people to adapt it. And then at some point it was normalized for a young samurai to see all older men wearing this hairstyle so it wasn't unusual for him to later cut his hair bald and cope about it being useful for helmets.

The purpose of this haircut was to providing cushioning between the helmet and the head to protect it from strikes, while also allowing space so it wouldn’t overheat underneath the helmet. They have military manuals explaining this
