I was able to slim down this 30MB transparent 4K PNG to a 3MB WebP without reducing the resolution, removing the transparency or any perceptible quality loss.

It spurred development of the superior JXL. Thank you WebP.

it fricking sucks. still run into programs and websites that dont support it

It stinks for copying things to and from

That's not a very nice thing to say about it, anons...

Noticeably better lossless compression than in PNG files.

Noticeably better animation compression than in GIF files. (However, the issues https://bugs.chromium.org/p/webp/issues/detail?id=523 and https://bugs.chromium.org/p/webp/issues/detail?id=554 remain unfixed since bloody 2021—2022, damn.)

Slightly better lossy compression than JPEG. (However, much better artifacts because JPEG's are an abomination.)

I only use it so daddy Google give me better speed points and it's important for position in daddy Google's search.
Because an important part of my customer's business model is deepthroating daddy Google's wiener. It's called SEO, and yes using webp is SEO

nta but tl;dr there was a bug or something discovered in the publicly available library for decoding webp that granted admin/root privileges or something. Seemed like a typical buffer overflow type shit as far as I remember.

It was pretty serious. Dunno if it still exists.

Dunno about the making millions of devices obsolete part unless said device had support by its manufacture. ......Which I wouldn't be surprised since manufacturers kinda tend to pull shit like that. They look for excuses like this and then use it as a reason to make you throw out your current device and buy a new one
