Some of the best shit ever. Isben is amongst the greatest playwrights ever. Norway also has Knut Hamsun whonis a great author thats been forgotten because he turned fascists during ww2
Denmark has maybe the best Scandinavian writer in Kierkegaard. Hans Christian Anderson is very good also.

Avoid anything from sweden though. Also dont fall for the Knausgaard meme

In my country of 10 million, Hamsun's Hunger has 4 or 5 different translations

If you mean contemporary or just recent (post 1950) I'm afraid it's . They are the masters of procedural crime novels and churn them out by the boatload. They won't stop because they have locked the international semi-literate women audience that are too cool for the TV show versions.

are the icelandic sagas worth reading? what's a good edition?

Very hit or miss. It's a subgenre of epic poetry/prose and doesn't guarantee quality (or lack thereof).

Njal's saga is flat out one of my favourite works of fiction ever. It's meandering, but every digression is calculated and builds wonderful foils to the main story. It's all about the conflict between pagan martial virtues and Christian clemency which I feel is in and of itself an interesting foil to modern issues that ought to strike a chord with IQfy given the number of culture war threads on the board.

Orkneyar Saga was fun in that it was a mix of medieval genres depending on the reigning earl. I also wound up liking the Blood Brothers' saga and some of the short sagas more than the finer ones like Egil and Grettir because I like fantasyslop and the shittier sagas have hilariously and sociopathically protagonist-centered morality.

Is that the one where the woman wants a divorce because the husband doesn't sexually satisfy her? If so it was pretty kino and it made me think they were far more socially progressive than I thought.

          >Is that the one where the woman wants a divorce because the husband doesn't sexually satisfy her?
They are unable to consummate their marriage because he was cursed by the milf mother of a local king in modern day Sweden to never be able to frick his fiancee (the milf had been sleeping with him for the duration of his stay at the king's court, and did not want him to return to Iceland). Whenever he and his wife tried to frick, his dick became too big, only to return to normal size whenever they gave up.

That's not really a progressive thing, having long term erectile dysfunction or shooting blanks was grounds for divorce in most ancient societies.

Women having a say in divorce is a progressive thing.

It's more like men having marital duties as well rather than women having a direct say. Anyway, looking at ancient societies through contemporary western lens lends itself poorly to actually understanding what those societies were like and how they thought.

What do you mean? What does that conflict have to do with the contemporary kulturkampf?

One of my favorite pieces of literature is Kalevala. I really liked it even if it was an English translation and I'm actually considering learning Finnish to read it in the original.

Being an immigrant sounds kind of fun. You can get away with practically anything short of murder, the state gives free housing and all sorts of other free shit to you, you don't even really need to work because the natives will do it for you, and the more liberally minded natives, which is like 95 percent of them, fall over each other to pander to you at every turn. Even if you do decide to do something you will have such massive affirmative action bonuses at your back that nothing is really out of your reach.

just read a bunch of finnish history books, in finnish. I can't read it super well but it is interesting to see the style they write in, usually not as fruity and crazy as the english. Also I hate looking at anything written by scandinavians because every time I look at pictures from there I just feel terrible about myself seeing all those 6 foot tall handsome guys with golden hair.

There was an interesting autobiography by this seventeenth century priest from Iceland who got kidnapped alongside his wife by barbary pirates who unironically sailed from Africa to Iceland to capture people for slavery and ransom. I can't remember his name, though.
