GNU/Linux could have achieved total desktop domination and change the course of computing in the early 2000 if it focuses making the UI on par with MacOSX. That's the only thing that MacOSX offered, a compelling UI. The programming environment wasn't even that good, it was ObjC and a mix between Cocoa and Carbon, but it looked smooth and worked fast. The sad thing is with Compiz and XGL it was almost there and I thought there was no chance to blow it. Yet they did with a series of goofs >aiglx >kde4 >gnome3 >pulseaudio
Now it's so over and things are even worse with shit like wayland. >tl;dr;
It was an inside job by redhat and microsoft agents that have infiltrated open sores.
>10,000 Linux distributions are gay.
This. There should have been a single "blessed" distro and it should have been Gentoo (or Gentoo-like), not for the meme factor, but for having an "official" ports tree on Linux and reproducible auditable builds. Now we are stuck with crap like Debian, RedHat/Fedora and Arch.

Example: Fedora Spins with different window managers, KDE/Gnome, etc…
Fedora can’t figure out how to install these window managers so that they can be added & removed from the base distribution, selectable at the login screen?
>The open sores community is only interested in creating more Linux Distributions.
macgays pretending to know what they're talking about always makes me laugh
RedHat & Microsoft didn’t have to lift a finger. The open sores community is only interested in creating more Linux Distributions.
GNU's issue in the 2000s was hardware compatibility. Back then things like hibernation and sleep didn't work properly and users had to rely on a Windows compatibility layer to get Wi-Fi to work.
PulseAudio was a big step forward. Relying on ALSA which couldn't even play two separate streams and required manual configuration to switch between headphones and speakers was fricking stupid. PulseAudio had slightly higher latency (which is unnoticeable for 99 % of usecases) and had the tendency of breaking shitty audio drivers, but users blamed Pulse instead of the drivers or ALSA.
You are a bunch of fricking newbies. If you didn't use GNU in the 2000s why the frick are you making shit up about it? The trend of making a new distro for everything began in 2010.
>wayland
Reminder that Wayland has been happening since 2010, discussed ("X should be removed blablabla") even earlier, and it's still not ready. WTF.
2008. Wayland has been in active development since 2008. It's only a year older than Android and iOS.
And let's not even mention that half the web was unusable on GNU because it didn't have Flash, Silverlight or Internet Explorer. Using GNU before Ubuntu was a real pain in the ass.
I find MacOS to be largely developer-unfriendly. Packagement management is a shitshow and developer tools keep rolling back/getting disabled with each update.
macOS is at its best when you use the machine as a thin client to connect to an actual Linux box
this is basically correct.
half the time a random assortment of STD headers are just missing and you have to search for random package installers on the developer page to get them. >missing <filesystem>
thank you tim apple.
I don't blame Apple for dropping xServe. There's no money in selling data center solution to cheap assed IT departments, who want everthing on "evaluation."
Dave's remark has really been my main argument for OS X but over the last 10 years or so Apple has been slowly chipping away at that claim's legitimacy.
Hear me and hear me well, you moron piece of shit.

Desktop Linux is perfect if you don’t value your time. I’ve been around this shit for a long time. The Mac provides a consistent environment, with the same tools as 10,000 Linux distributions.
I have been working with this shit since the Unix Wars of the late ‘80s. Apple offers a complete solution. I don’t see a complete solution in those 10,000 Linux distributions.
apple is for developers like wireless 60% mechanical keyboards and fake ikea plants are for developers
for webshitters who pretend to be coders and designers at the same time
Can't believe some moron sat down and photoshopped this old ad with a modern macbook and different background. I bet it was some fanboy homosexual who did it for free too.

Hibernate & Sleep still don’t work properly.

t. nocoder
sorry anon I like to actually program, but if you want to be a "coder" I'm sure mac is good for javascript "devs"
.t illiterate with zero reading comprehension
been using macos for 10 years. No issues like this. Oh and I write code for the Linux Kernel for a living...
>Oh and I write code for the Linux Kernel for a living...
this certainly explains a lot
The only time I've seen a package management issue is when the new version of macOS drops. It takes MacPorts a month to catch up with the new release.
App Store & Sparkle work better than Flatpak does.

thank you tim apple.
>Poorly designed posix port
>It's woefully unusable
I mean, ya, what did you expect?
unix is for eunuchs
And windows is for bimbos.
It's hard to take Apple seriously when they have no server hardware
Sigh. A Mac mini or Mac Studio can be dropped into a rack for those who need it.

I thought the cheese grater has expansion slots. You'll pay for it, but the slots are there.
>Sigh.
>plebbit spacing
Go back, moron.
I think you will find it is only doing that to UNIX. Linux is still superior.
Desktop Linux is superior when you don't value your time.
It's not even UNIX. Unlike Torvald's UNIX.
monokernels are gay
10,000 Linux distributions are gay.
Don't be racist, you white trash.
Go back to plebbit, moronic newbie.
Behave yourself, white trash.
Dave's remark has really been my main argument for OS X but over the last 10 years or so Apple has been slowly chipping away at that claim's legitimacy.
xcode sucks and arm architecture means i have to hack around that bullshit to use anything else
Who is forcing you to use Xcode?
What bullshit are you hacking around?

I have a macbook but my workstation is still Linux.
I don't get why Apple fanboys get so butthurt about Linux.

GNU is Not UNIX so Mac can't send it to /dev/null
