      >you can't refute this
GNU/Linux could have achieved total desktop domination and change the course of computing in the early 2000 if it focuses making the UI on par with MacOSX. That's the only thing that MacOSX offered, a compelling UI. The programming environment wasn't even that good, it was ObjC and a mix between Cocoa and Carbon, but it looked smooth and worked fast. The sad thing is with Compiz and XGL it was almost there and I thought there was no chance to blow it. Yet they did with a series of goofs
      >aiglx
      >kde4
      >gnome3
      >pulseaudio
Now it's so over and things are even worse with shit like wayland.

          10,000 Linux distributions are gay.

          >10,000 Linux distributions are gay.
This. There should have been a single "blessed" distro and it should have been Gentoo (or Gentoo-like), not for the meme factor, but for having an "official" ports tree on Linux and reproducible auditable builds. Now we are stuck with crap like Debian, RedHat/Fedora and Arch.

Example: Fedora Spins with different window managers, KDE/Gnome, etc…

Fedora can’t figure out how to install these window managers so that they can be added & removed from the base distribution, selectable at the login screen?

RedHat & Microsoft didn’t have to lift a finger. The open sores community is only interested in creating more Linux Distributions.

GNU's issue in the 2000s was hardware compatibility. Back then things like hibernation and sleep didn't work properly and users had to rely on a Windows compatibility layer to get Wi-Fi to work.

PulseAudio was a big step forward. Relying on ALSA which couldn't even play two separate streams and required manual configuration to switch between headphones and speakers was fricking stupid. PulseAudio had slightly higher latency (which is unnoticeable for 99 % of usecases) and had the tendency of breaking shitty audio drivers, but users blamed Pulse instead of the drivers or ALSA.

You are a bunch of fricking newbies. If you didn't use GNU in the 2000s why the frick are you making shit up about it? The trend of making a new distro for everything began in 2010.

2008. Wayland has been in active development since 2008. It's only a year older than Android and iOS.

And let's not even mention that half the web was unusable on GNU because it didn't have Flash, Silverlight or Internet Explorer. Using GNU before Ubuntu was a real pain in the ass.

I find MacOS to be largely developer-unfriendly. Packagement management is a shitshow and developer tools keep rolling back/getting disabled with each update.

macOS is at its best when you use the machine as a thin client to connect to an actual Linux box

The only time I've seen a package management issue is when the new version of macOS drops. It takes MacPorts a month to catch up with the new release.

App Store & Sparkle work better than Flatpak does.

      this is basically correct.
half the time a random assortment of STD headers are just missing and you have to search for random package installers on the developer page to get them.
      >missing <filesystem>

I don't blame Apple for dropping xServe. There's no money in selling data center solution to cheap assed IT departments, who want everthing on "evaluation."
